For example, my 3-year-old doesn’t attend school at this time; however, when her sisters are at school I observe her imitate some of the games they play with her when they are home. Games such as hide and seek or imitating each of their dancing styles. This stage is known as the imitation stage. My 3-year-old also scribbles and draws on the walls of our home. Most of the times I don’t quite understand her drawing and I definitely never understand her scribbles. When I ask my daughter what is her drawing about she usually doesn’t know; however, in her mind she may be drawing a picture of what she is trying to say or think in her own mind. It may not make sense to me, but to her there’s a meaning behind it. As Piaget has described in the preoperational stage my daughter is exemplifying her drawings and scribbles as an imitation and symbolic play stage. As Piaget’s theory states as she gets older scribbles and drawing will begin to be more accurate representations of objects and people. Another observation I made is when my daughter needs something she utilizes one word such as “milk” or “juice” whereas, before she would just point or bring you to what she wants. This is the stage called mental imagery stage as described by Piaget where children start to visualize a wide range of things in their mind by asking names of the objects to establish the relation between words and objects. The final stage I observed from the preoperational stage is her verbal evocation of events although my daughter doesn’t say much I have notice that she remembers people whom may have visited our home. If that particular person told her their name even if they come back to my house months later she will still remember them and their names or if we’ve been to a place before and she goes back she will remember that particular event. For example, when we ride past McDonald’s, she points and says McDonald’s because she is familiar with that place. A family member that I hadn’t seen for a couple of months stopped in the other day with her son and she pointed to her son and said “JJ.” If she saw an object such as a doll baby at the store once I say doll baby to her and she she’s a similar object she will point and say “doll baby.” As Piaget describes in this stage, children can use words to describe and represent past events, people or items.
