Question Answered step-by-step Respond to your peer’s initial post below (200-350 words). Use APA style and two new reference:”Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are the fourth leading cause of healthcare-associated infections in acute care hospitals in the United States” (Ferguson, 2018, p. 273). According to Hinkle & Cheever (2018), “Patients with UTIs are at increased risk for gram-negative sepsis. For each day a urinary catheter is in place, the risk of developing catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) increases” (p. 1620). Prevention of CAUTIs is important due to the negative effects that can accompany them including unpleasant symptoms, additional medications, serious complications, and delayed discharge (Hinkle & Cheever, 2018, p. 1620).There are many evidenced-based techniques that nurses can employ to help prevent CAUTIs in their patients. According to Hernandez et al. (2019), “Avoidance of unnecessary urinary catheter use is the most important strategy to prevent CAUTI, thus, nurses should be aware of appropriate catheter indications” (p. 38). Evidenced-based practice recommends “documentation of appropriate catheter indications, daily assessment of catheter need and prompt catheter removal using standard precautions, preferably within 24 hours after an uncomplicated surgery” (Hernandez et al., 2019, p. 39). The need for a catheter should be assessed by the nurse daily, and standard precautions should be used each time a catheter is removed (Hernandez et al., 2019, p. 39). By following each of these guidelines, the nurse can ensure that a urinary catheter is only being used when indicated and that its use is discontinued as soon as it is no longer necessary. Based on their research, Hernandez et al. (2019) recommend implementing “continuous in-service nursing education about the evidence-based CAUTI prevention bundle and about complete and accurate documentation using the catheter maintenance checklist for it to be effective in CAUTI prevention” (p. 40). The checklist includes boxes for “appropriate catheter indications, hand hygiene, catheter insertion technique, catheter maintenance, and catheter removal” that nurses can check-off once they have completed each task (Hernandez et al., 2019, p. 31). It is also important that nurses feel comfortable and learn to speak up to physicians regarding prompt catheter removal when one has been in place for longer than necessary. In order for this to happen, nurses must be educated on evidenced-based indications for urinary catheters. ReferencesFerguson, A. (2018).
