Her most famous work was published after her death. These late poems were written over a short period of intense productivity and are generally considered her best work. “Morning Song” was written around the birth of Plath’s first daughter, Frieda, and is one of Plath’s most popular poems. Less than two years after the birth of her daughter, Plath’s marriage to the poet Ted Hughes ended in separation, and in 1963 Plath committed 171 suicide by gas (Beckmann). “Morning Song” shows a mother’s ambivalence to her newborn child. Work CitedBeckmann, Anja. “Sylvia Plath (1932-1963): Short Biography.” www.sylviaplath.de 16 Apr. 2007. Dozier describes how mid-nineteenth-century Anglo-Americans judged Indian ceremonies as “obscene” and “immoral” and took steps to stop them (91). While some Indian groups responded by rejecting Anglo-American religion and customs, the Pueblo living in New Mexico took a more indirect approach by fusing new ceremonies and customs with their own. We see such indirect resistance in “The Man to Send Rain Clouds” as the Laguna Indians fuse the holy water from the Catholic last rites into their own funeral ceremony. Like the Indian groups Dozier describes, the Laguna in this story borrows Christian rituals and ceremonies but rejects the social organization associated with them. Thus, Leon and Teresa ask Father Paul to bring his holy water, but they reject the social hierarchy that has the priest presiding over the last rites. Perhaps more significantly, the Indians reject the priest’s right to interpret the significance of the ceremony and Teofilo’s death. Father Paul sees Teofilo as a (lost) soul crossing over to another world; Leon and Teresa see him as an ongoing force in their world. Thus, “The Man to Send Rain Clouds” shows us how acceptance can be a form of resistance that is ultimately more powerful than more direct forms of Anglo-American domination. Work CitedDozier, Edward P. “The Pueblo Indians of the Southwest: A Survey of the Anthropological Literature and a Review of Theory, Method, and Results.” Current Anthropology 5.2 (1964): 79-97. Dozier describes how in the mid-nineteenth century, Anglo-Americans judged Indian ceremonies as “obscene” and “immoral” and took steps to stop them, removing Indian children from their homes, cutting their long hair, placing children in schools where the use of Indian languages was forbidden, and clothing them “in attire which befitted American standards of decency and morality” (91). The priest in Leslie Marmon Silko’s “The Man to Send Rain Clouds” represents this Anglo-American heritage. He wants the Indians to give up their own customs and instead adopt his Catholic rituals and ceremonies. Work CitedDozier, Edward P. “The Pueblo Indians of the Southwest: A Survey of the Anthropological Literature and a Review of Theory, Method, and Results.” Current Anthropology 5.2 (1964): 79-97.
