Question Answered step-by-step Respond on the issues identified, you can offer assistance or address their concerns or questionsuse an evidence-based article to support your answer Personal experience in the hospice field has made it evident the effects of inadequate staffing. Having too high of a census affects quality of care and causes undue stress on the nurses. In her research, Simpson et al (2016), found “missed care, potential for failure to rescue, and job-related stress and dissatisfaction as three consistent themes related to inadequate staffing.” Here, at a local hospice company, nurses have complained about the stress of having a high census, visits have needed to be rescheduled, missed, or covered by LVNs, and several nurses have threatened to quit because they are not satisfied with having so many patients. Missed care can involve having to reschedule a visit, being unable to complete a thorough assessment, and not completing charting in a timely manner. When nurses are “prioritizing and rationing,” they question “what absolutely needs to be done, what can wait, and what can be skipped,” Simpson et al (2016). In reality, nurses should be able to complete full assessments without having to skip any care. Inadequate staffing leaves nurses often skipping meals, they feel overwhelmed and tired, all leading to job-related stress and dissatisfaction. Simpson et al (2016), even mentions that nurses are unable to take vacation because there is no one to cover, which is currently the case at a local hospice company. Curtin (2016) mentioned in her article that adequate staffing, “reduces medical and medication errors, decreases patient complications, improves nurse retention and job satisfaction” to name a few. In the article she further mentions the subject of ethics – “do no harm.” Inadequate staffing affects Provision 3.4, Professional Responsibility in Promoting a Culture of Safety; and Provision 6, The Moral Milieu of Nursing Practice. In Provision 3, Fowler (2015) writes that ‘the nurse protects the rights, health, and safety of the patient.” If a nurse is missing visit, making errors, not documenting in a timely manner, then they are not keeping the patient safe and not promoting a culture of safety. This can also lead to increased patient complications and is not in keeping with “do no harm.” With Provision 6, “the nurse establishes, maintains, and improves the ethical environment of the work setting and conditions of employment that are conducive to safe, quality health care,” Fowler (2015). Provision 6.3 specifically discusses the Responsibility for the Healthcare Environment. With inadequate staffing, nurses cannot “fulfill their obligations in a safe work environment” for themselves or their patients. Global Issue Reading through the World Health Organization (2019) it is key to note that most maternal newborn deaths and complications are not only preventable but also treatable. “Hemorrhage, pregnancy-related hypertensive disorders and infection are the main causes of global maternal deaths” (Bingham et al, 2011, as cited in Edmonson et al 2017). The provision that are affected are Provision 2.1 Primacy of the Patient’s Interest “because the nurse’s primary commitment is to the patient” (Fowler, 2015, p. 26). Provision 2.3 Collaboration is also important to mention because as this is a global issue, nurses must continuously collaborate to meet the demands of patient care. In this case it would require collaborating globally. Finally, “Provision 8 The nurse collaborates with other health professionals and the pubic to protect human rights, promote health diplomacy, and reduce health disparities” (Fowler, 2015, p. 129). KFF (2020) emphasized that the majority of maternal and newborn deaths and complications occur in countries that are less developedReferences Curtin, L. L. (2016).
