Plot Foreshadowing Point of view Setting, Literary Analysis help
Paper 1—Literary Analysis
Length: 2-3 typed, double-spaced pages (400-600 words) with in-text citation and works cited page using MLA guidelines.
Research: 2 sources from professional critical articles; use the libguide and search the databases recommended for this project.
In this, your first paper of Introduction to Literature, you are offering formal analysis of narrative. In addition to offering your own observations and interpretations of a particular story or pair of stories, you must integrate primary sources (quotes from story) and secondary sources (outside critique) into your essay. Additionally, you must furnish a separate works cited page.
Assignment: Choose one or a pair of the short stories assigned and write a 2-3 page analysis. Base your analysis on how the story(ies) use(s) a particular narrative device or else, write an analysis that brings to light a recurring image or theme in the story. Support your points with quotes and details from the story as well as with ideas from other critics.
Some major conventions:
Introduction: identify the story or stories you are analyzing. Mention the title and author as well as a topic sentence/ thesis that identifies the focus of your analysis
Body: Use the point—example—exposition pattern
Conclusion: Restate your thesis and offer a clincher
Brainstorm:
Review and recall the narrative devices covered in class—particularly the ones you will discuss and present in regard to your analysis:
Plot Foreshadowing Point of view Setting
Chronology Flashback Dialogue Theme
Character Action Tone Conflict
Irony Denouement Symbolism Mood
Or, you may explore a theme or important figure in a story:
Violence Materialism Death Substitution
Redemption Marriage Racism Cats
Forgiveness Loss Class Accidents
Another option is to expand on any of the homework analysis assignments.
Narrative Choices:
“The Story of an Hour,” Kate Chopin
“Cat in the Rain,” Ernest Hemingway
“The Necklace,” Guy de Maupassant
“Misery,” Anton Chekhov
“The Cask of Amontillado,” Edgar Allen Poe
“A Good Man Is Hard to Find,” Flannery O’Connor
I will like to go with “The Necklace” by Maupassant.
