It seems obvious that smaller your income the more likely chance you have to live in a disadvantaged neighborhood and studies show that mothers living in more disadvantaged neighborhoods are less likely to have social support available during their pregnancies. The study I read determined that mothers in lower social classes have less access to education, income, employment, insurance, healthcare and residential locations. All of these things can lead to the increase likelihood of low birth weight and preterm births.

I live in an area that isn’t very large or wealthy, but like other areas, we do have WIC available which can give support not only infants with low birth weights and preterm babies, but also their mothers. WIC stands for Women, Infants and Children and this service provides food, formula and education about nutrition of children and their mothers in coordination with the Health Department.

Although not local I found an organization called Grahams Foundation, which will send out a Care Package to families with preemie babies and also offers a lot of online support to these families. The website has community message boards to use for support, advice and to just tell your story. This foundation was started by a family in memory of their son, Graham.
