Jubal Early was born on 3^rd November, 1816, in Franklin County, Virginia. Early’s father was a successful Tobacco farmer. He attended schools in the Virginia towns of Lynchburg and Danville. He joined the United states Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1833 where he graduated 18^th in a class of 50. Due to the skills he acquired in his studies, he fought in the Second Seminole War shortly before returning to his home Franklin County to study and practice law (Cooling, 1989). His Law profession helped him succeed in the Virginia House of Delegates election in 1841.
