Chapter 12 explores cognitive development during middle childhood. The contributions of Piaget, Vygotsky, and the information processing approach are highlighted. Approaches to education and achievement are also discussed. Video lesson 12, “The School Years: Cognitive Development,” illustrates the newly emerging cognitive skills and explores Kohlberg’s theory of moral reasoning, as well as advances in language development and code-switching.
