Instructions:
your understanding of the materials assigned in readings and discussed
in class during the first half of the semester. You are asked to answer
the questions as thoroughly as possible. To do this you may use the
Ferrante text, and lecture notes, (remember to credit people for their
words and ideas when you use them (in other words, do not plagiarize,
its illegal)). Please take the time to explain the ideas or concepts you use in your answers. Do not simply quote the author. You should quote and explain, using your own words. I want to see that you have not only read the materials, but that you understand them as well. solitary activity, and this means that you are not to work in groups. There is no page limit f,
nor is there a page or paragraph minimum (though writing a page and a
half double-spaced per question seems reasonable). Again, you are only
required to be thorough, and fully answer the questions (though partial
credit will be assessed for those responses that are less than
complete). Please be sure to number your question
responses appropriately.

Briefly describe the notion of the Sociological Imagination.
Identify and briefly describe the three major theoretical perspectives
(or paradigms) in Sociology, and discuss the differences between them.

process. What is the difference between reliability’, and validity?
Briefly discuss the differences between quantitative and qualitative
research methods.

elements of the Trinity of Social Reality, and how they are related.
List and briefly describe the various elements of culture. Briefly
describe the linguistic relativity hypothesis (or Sapir-Whorf
hypothesis). Briefly compare and contrast the ideas of Ethnocentrism
and Cultural Genocide .

List and briefly discuss the elements of the Social Self as
described by G. H. Mead. Briefly discuss the concept of social
structure. Briefly discuss the idea of Social Interaction. Briefly
discuss the difference between a status and a role. Briefly discuss the
dynamic between in-groups and out-groups. What is a formal
organization? Briefly discuss the concept of ‘McDonaldization’.

Briefly discuss the difference between deviance and crime. Briefly
discuss the various types of deviants (pure, secret, primary, and
secondary). Briefly discuss the concept of Social Control. Briefly
discuss the difference between obedience and conformity. Briefly
discuss the approach to deviance taken by social theorist Émile
Durkheim.
Extra Credit (4 points)
Based
on our in-class discussions, briefly explain the connection between
culture, socialization and social interaction, the recent gun control
debate occurring in the US.
