Preamble

As I write this discussion page, the head of the United States and the leader of North Korea are meeting in Singapore for the Trump-Kim Summit regarding North Korea’s nuclear weapons program (see BBC NEWS ). Also because I tend to stay up late and am a news junky, the latest news is that an agreement has been signed between the leaders (the four-point document will be discussed in Question 2, below).

Questions

1. According to the North Korea reading (check the upload file) and North Korea video, Why is North Korea seen as belligerent against its neighbors and the United States? Give three examples and a historical reason. (5 points)
2. Given the recent signing of agreements between the Koreas known as the Panmunjom Declaration for Peace, .signed on 27 April 2018 that there “will be no more war on the Korean Peninsula” (para. 2) as well as the Trump-Kim summit that both leaders signed a four-point agreement to: 1) a commitment to establishing new US-North Korea relations; 2) a joint effort for building peace on the peninsula; 3) a North Korean commitment to denuclearization; 4) a joint effort for recovering US POW/MIA remains; do you believe these agreements are a good start for opening relations with North Korea? (5 points)
