MCRAE AND COSTA: THE FIVE-FACTOR MODEL
From the theories developed by the past trait theorists, Robert McRae and Paul Costa developed a model of personality called The Big Five. The five factors included in the model are neuroticism, extraversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness, and they are measured by the NEO Personality Inventory. All but agreeableness have been demonstrated to have strong hereditary components. The factors appear to exist across cultures, although different cultures have varying views of which characteristics they believe are most important. The factors also demonstrate the stability of personality, meaning that how you score on each of the factors is not likely to change much over your life – if you score high on extraversion as a young child, you likely will continue to score high on extraversion if tested periodically throughout your life. Much research also has been conducted on the various emotions and behaviors that correlate with the five identified factors, such as testing if there is a relationship between/among neuroticism, feelings of well being, and success in life. With the big five relying on self reports, there is some scepticism over people’s ability to report accurately when giving a self evaluation. As well, the model focuses on stability of personality, but it doesn’t discuss change of personality.
