Mr. Hammond turned his face to the wall and pretended to sleep when his nurse walked in. He hoped she would just go away and leave him alone. Better yet, he hoped everyone would just leave him alone.Nursing Assessment Including Client StoryMr. Hammond, 58 years of age, is a business executive in a large company. He is married and has four children; two of them are in college and two are at home. He is a long-distance runner and competes in running events. He has had frequent bouts of diverticulitis. He recently recovered from a bout that was treated by intravenous antibiotics. He is scheduled for a colon resection to remove the involved area. During the required preparation of cathartics, he became dizzy and fell. His wife called an ambulance, and now he is on a surgical floor, receiving intravenous fluids. His vital signs are: temperature: 97.8° F; pulse: 124 beats per minute; respirations: 18 breaths per minute; and blood pressure: 110/78 mm Hg (lying) and 90/60 mm Hg (standing). He still becomes dizzy when he stands. He either continues to have diarrhea, although not drinking fluids, or he uses a lot of coercion. His oral mucous membranes are dry and sticky.
