I am currently not doing my pediatric clinical but I do work in an emergency room so I get to see and chaperone many pediatric patients. I also had experience with children in my adult rotations so I will base my experience on that. What I have seen is that my preceptor did not document a Tanner stage and I do not see that documented from providers in the ER. I know this scale is important is it determines what stage of development they are in.Jarrett (2015) stated that the Tanner scale is a “scale of physical development in children, adolescents and adults which defines physical measurements of development based on external primary and secondary sex characteristics; such as: the size of the breasts, genitalia, development of pubic and axillary hair and, for boys, testicular volume”. That stated it is important to assess. This practice should be implemented more often and I know this can be time consuming but it is an important factor. While I was searching I did not see any specific recommendations on performing a Tanner scale but as a provider, I will attempt to use this so I can better understand where my patient is, as far as puberty is concerned.During my rotations and experience in the ER, I have seen providers as the parents to leave the room if the provider feels as if the patient is wanting privacy such as wanting to speak about sexual activity or possible pregnancy. When I am a provider, I will follow their way and do that as well. Adolescents can be a difficult stage for the patient and with that, they may need privacy to open up about what is going on. “When third parties such as parents of adolescent patients are involved, privacy considerations become even more complex.
