Question Answered step-by-step Valvular heart disease precipitates heart failure. Approximately 2.5%of the US population has valvular heart disease (Oliver-McNeil, 2019). The aortic and mitral valve are the most common valves that become diseased. Oliver-McNeil (2019) states “risk factors for aortic and mitral valve disease include congenital defect, infectious disease (rheumatic fever and endocarditis), coronary artery disease, hyperlipidemia, left ventricular dilation or damage to the chordae that supports the mitral valve leaflets” (p.65). Patients need to be diligent in keeping their appointments so providers can recognize early changes in heart sounds to make appropriate referrals to cardiologist. Patients need to be able to recognize worsening signs and symptoms to seek intervention before the situation becomes severe. Symptoms include edema, dyspnea on exertion or at rest, orthopnea, or paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea. Please discuss and add references.
