Overview of Assignment:

The first module (or week) of the course will introduce you to several new concepts or terms that we will use throughout the course. For this assignment, you should choose ONE concept to apply to one of these works of literature,

Octavia Butler, Parable of the Sower

Suggested Concepts for Application, Definition, and Illustration:

Science Fiction
Dystopia and/or dystopian fiction
Segregation
Racism
Derrick Bell’s theory, “interest convergence dilemma”
Empathy

In your essay, you will define the concept. The definition should be taken from lecture materials or assigned readings. Then you will use it to examine one of the works of literature stipulated above. Use examples from the text to help support your application.

Tips and Requirements:

Your composition should have an introduction with a thesis statement, body paragraphs that draw on evidence from the text to support and elaborate your ideas.
Your paper should include sustained contentions with elements of the primary text, including analysis of quotations.
The conclusion paragraph of your essay should make connections from the concept and the work of literature to our contemporary world.
