Student post: The musical culture I found the most interesting during this course was the Japanese musical culture. I found it the most interesting because I’ve always wanted to visit Japan, more specifically Tokyo. I think they’re culture and they’re country is so beautiful and completely different than what i’m use to here in the United States. The instruments I found the most intriguing was the Shamisen. I thought it was so weird, different yet sad how the sound box is covered with dog or cat skin. I’d love to see one of those in real life one day! Throughout this course I think I’ve learned much more about our diverse planet. I feel like in California we live in a bubble and are secluded to only Californian or American cultures. The only thing I have been exposed to was my own Middle Eastern culture. I traveled the world in 8 weeks by just sitting at home throughout this course! I’ve also learned that each musical activity reflect the cultures that create them. Each culture we studied had their own touch of music and traditions that they got from previous cultures.
