Prompt: Select a topic that involves persuasion and find a document (in print or online) that makes a persuasive case about the topic. Write a 2-4 paragraph summary of the techniques that your source uses to make its persuasive case. Are you able to identify the persuasive case and the strategies used ? Is the document effective in persuading you to agree with it or not? Why or why not? Think about how the source uses the ethos, pathos, and logos appeals and analyze the persuasive merits and flaws of your source.

The book describes this exercise as a group assignment, but you will complete it individually. Also, rather than picking a topic as a class (as the textbook prompt suggests), you will select your own topic that you are interested in. When looking for a source, try to find one that seems credible and legitimate to you. please select a source that you deem acceptable at first glance.

Topics might include things along the lines of minimum wage, vaccines, the ongoing election cycle, open Internet, privacy and other 4th Amendment issues, or any other controversial issue that relies on persuasion and argumentation to support a particular stance.

SIDE NOTE: For my own selfish reasons, I would prefer you avoid topics like climate change, 2nd Amendment issues, same-sex marriage, abortion, and other topics that have become cliche and overused in this kind of assignment. If you have a particular interest in one of these topics, then you may use it for this assignment. However, I have read literally hundreds of essays and assignments on these topics over the years, so I’d prefer that you choose something more original.
