When a mass killings occur by a gunman, or small group of gunmen the debate over gun control reemerges. Those in favor of increasing restrictions on gun control point at the murders that have occurred at Columbine High School, Virginia Tech and the recent killings in Binghamton, New York, where a Vietnamese immigrant, Jiverly Wong, tired of years of taunting over his accent, instead of pummeling the next person to taunt him, murders 13 people in a moment of rage and possible insanity. The shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in Tuscan, Arizona on January 8, 2011 which wounded 11 others and resulted in the deaths of 6 people.

And, of course, the killing of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman on February 26, 2012. Where the shooter was in legal possession of a hand gun, the Sandy Hook Elementary shootings, and other recent shooting deaths.

More than 12,000 Americans meet their death through gun violence each year. That’s more than 1,000 a month.

On the other hand the Second Amendment of the Constitution guarantees the right of a United States citizen to bear arms. There are millions of responsible gun owners who use their weapons legally for recreation and personal protection.

In this discussion we will be debating:

Resolved: The United States should initiate laws limiting the access of guns to her citizens.

This could include types of guns, like automatic weapons, and/or how guns are sold, like increasing the waiting period between the time a gun is purchased and when a person can  pick it up.
