Pregnant women with asthma have an increased risk of preterm birth, intrauterine growth restriction, preeclampsia, and pregnancy induced hypertension. Those that have had an asthma exacerbation in the year prior to pregnancy are at risk of having a preterm delivery. Their off spring are also at a risk for congenital malformations and respiratory disease. Most pregnant women with asthma do not have a decline in lung function although 30-40% asthma control worsens (Shedd & Hays, 2016). Obesity is a risk factors for asthma exacerbations. Pregnant women with asthma should be monitored every 4 weeks by questionnaires, spirometry, and peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR). Women who are pregnant should be encouraged to continue their medication regimen rather than reducing or eliminating them.
