This is a persuasive essay that seeks to convince the reader that your interpretation of the piece is valid. A visual analysis is morethan a description of the work of art. Although it includes description, it seeks to interpret the meaning of an object by carefully examining its physical qualities. Research beyond the museum label and website is not necessary. If you do choose to research the piece,make sure to cite your sources.Go to LACMA and carefully study the work of art. Plan to spend time with the piece; first-hand examination of the object will enrich your analysis of it. In fact, it is a great idea to write about the piece while you are there at the museum. If the museum permits photography (usually without a flash), take multiple pictures of the piece from all angles for your reference. Sketch a picture of the work in order to see details you might have missed. Do not forget the back of the piece if it is 3-D. Make note of things like dimensions, materials, and subject matter. Think about what type of tools were used inmaking your work of art. Review the vocabulary from the Stokstad Starter Kit on Beachboard. Use evidence to argue for an interpretation of the meaning of the piece. The paper should be four pages, double spaced, with one-inch margins and 12pt font.

Make sure to begin your essay with an introductory paragraph that includes a strong thesis statement. Next, you should write several body sections that focus on individual elements of your argument. You should use transitions to move from paragraph to paragraph, often reminding your reader how the current section of your paper relates to your thesis. Finally, you will end your essay with a conclusion that reiterates your argument and reminds the reader about the evidence you have used to make your point. Include a quality image or two of the work of art at the end of your paper.

Alien land laws were legislation passed at the state level seeking to constrain land ownership of Asian immigrants, especially Japanese farmers, citing their potential economic threat. As Aoki writes,

[The 1913 California Alien Land Law] barred “aliens ineligible to citizenship” from owning fee simple absolute interest in agricultural property [i.e., ownership] or from entering into leases for such land longer than three years. Land acquired in violation of the statue would, following successful completion of an escheat action by the California State Attorney General, escheat to the state [i.e., confiscation] (55).

They key phrase here is “alien ineligible to citizenship” which references the exclusion of Asian immigrants from naturalization.

California’s passage of its first alien land law in 1913 was succeeded by eight more states passing various forms of alien land laws by 1925, most of them in the west but later also included southern states as well. The alien land laws themselves were upheld as constitutional by the Supreme Court of the United State, which we will look at here.

Aoki argues that the alien land laws set the stage for the incarceration of Japanese Americans, a topic that will be explored in an upcoming module.
