LP3 Assignment: Instructional Guide

This assignment will assess the following competency: 3. Develop instructional writing skills.

Directions: For this assignment, you will submit a cover memo and an original set of instructions introducing the instructions to your readers. The cover memo should be the first page, followed by the instructions.

Write a set of instructions for one task that you are familiar with for an audience who is not familiar with your topic. The instructions must be 1-2 pages. Topics may include but are not limited to:
• How to avoid plagiarism
• How to proofread your written work
• How to give a peer review
• How to search for and find scholarly, peer-reviewed articles

Key concepts to include:
• Instructions should be clear and concise.
• Instructions should be organized in a “user-friendly” manner.
• Instructions should include definitions or clarifications for advanced terminology.
• Instructions should include warnings/cautions.
• Instructions should include pictures/diagrams to help clarify instructions (use if needed; not required).

Along with the instructions, submit a cover memo addressed to your instructor discussing the following questions:
• What is the purpose of your instructions?
• Who is your intended audience?
• How did you organize the instructions (step by step, bullet list, narrative format, etc.) and why did you choose that format?
• What were the warnings/cautions you needed to include?

Employee Turnover and Future Staffing Needs

A high employee turnover in any industry can be a concern, more so in those that are customer centered. Industries that deal with people’s health are in an even more precarious position. Healthcare organizations with high attrition must consider how a “revolving door” of care providers affects the quality of care the organization is able to provide and the satisfaction of patients with their overall experience. HR professionals are responsible for staffing positions, training employees, providing benefits, and handling any problems or disciplinary actions. The day-to-day responsibilities of managing the workforce can leave little time for long-range planning.

Tasks:

Post to the Discussion Area your responses to the following:

• How does a high employee turnover rate impact the operations in a healthcare organization?
  Give examples of one clinical and one nonclinical position in your answer. For example, what is the effect of a high turnover among lab technicians and among billing staff?
• What data may be gathered and analyzed to assess the reasons for employee turnover?
  What additional data might HRM gather?
• What would you use for forecasting metrics for current and future staffing needs?
  Give an example of a particular healthcare setting (e.g., urban or rural, large or small hospital, or primary or tertiary care).
• What best practices would you recommend for reducing healthcare employee turnover? Explain at least three such best practices and their positive affect on a healthcare organization.
• Among clinical staff, would you target any particular age group for retention efforts? For example, would you make greater effort to retain younger staff for the organization’s long-term staffing needs or would you rather retain more experienced employees to improve the quality of care?

This week’s study notes and your textbook emphasized the importance of understanding multiculturalism in effective interviewing.  We often take for granted our own assumptions, values, and ways of perceiving the world until we encounter people from another culture. Recall a time when you experienced “culture shock” by traveling to another part of the world or by interacting with someone from another culture and were surprised by some of your own assumptions. If you have not interacted with people from different cultures, think about a book or film in which you became aware of your own assumptions and discovered that they were not universal. If you are having trouble, consider renting the movies Slumdog Millionaire, The House of Sand and Fog, Mi Familia, or Double Happiness.

For this discussion assignment:

1. Identify and explain an example of “culture shock” either from your own experience or from a movie or book.
2. Explain how your personal assumptions were challenged.
3. Discuss what you learned about your own beliefs and if your beliefs were changed in any way.
4. As appropriate, cite the online course, the textbook, and other credible, scholarly sources to substantiate the points you are making.
5. Apply APA standards for writing and citations to your work.

Assignment: Employee Orientation Plan
Employee orientation provides an opportunity to welcome new employees, provide them with key
information and to acclimate them to the organization’s culture and practices. In this Assignment, you
will develop an orientation plan for a company that includes an organizational and departmental
orientation.
In this Assignment, you will be assessed on the following outcome:
HR400-5: Develop an orientation plan to use when onboarding new employees.

Using information from the text and resources from the Library write a 2–3 page paper that outlines
an employee orientation plan for the following scenario.
You are the human resource manager for a 300–employee insurance company and you would like to
start a new employee orientation program. In order to get approval from the company’s senior
managers, you develop a plan that outlines the reasons for conducting orientation and what content
the program will include. In this plan you will need to:
1. Identify the reasons and purpose for conducting employee orientation.
2. Outline what would be covered in organizational and departmental orientation.
3. Indicate the length of the program, who conducts it and what formats will be used.
4. Describe if and how you would incorporate a web–based component into the program.
