Film Diary [FD]

Film Diary [FD]

[copied from Project Descriptions in Syllabus]

Please use the Film Diary Discussion Forum to keep and post an annotated record of your film viewing this semester.

By the time this class ends, you probably will have screened at least twenty films and clips, and this diary should help you as a mnemonic device for remembering and comparing your viewing experiences; it also will enable me to see your cinematic activity, and your classmates to compare your entries with their own diary listings.

If you watch other films during the period of the course that are not assigned or suggested by me, please still feel free to list them here, even if they may not fall within the subject area[s] of this course. I will trust your judgment as to what choices you make regarding what entries you record. In other words, this is not, strictly speaking, a TV journal, so you don’t want to list sitcoms, newscasts, music videos, etc., but if there are dramas or documentaries or series that you see or follow, and that you think make sense to list here in terms of your critical viewing of them, then don’t hesitate to do so (especially as they relate to the interplay of visual culture and its mass media artifacts).

At the very least, for films record the title, director, year, and country of origin [most for this class will be U.S.], and then feel free to include whatever other info you want (actors, writers, cinematographer, etc.). Also write a brief description/impression/response (at least one or two substantive paragraphs, 100+ words minimum) of the film and your response to it. It would also be helpful to include a link to the film, such as to IMDB [International Movie Data Base], netflix, or amazon.com, so that anyone who reviews your diary may connect directly to a synopsis and more information about the film in question.

You can use this Diary as “talking (or writing) notes” for class Discussions, and as a record of your viewing over the course of the semester (if you have already listed films in a similar manner in other Discussion Forums, simply copy and paste those notes in your diary if you’d like).

[If you watched a clip from a longer film, indicate that with “clip” or “excerpt” in brackets. While Porter’s GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY or any number of Méliès films (for examples) may be short, you still should consider them as “real movies” and take them as seriously as you do a “feature film” with a more conventional running time.]

In the Film Diary Discussion Forum Topic create a “Reply” with your name as the subject, and consistently post your film diary entries under this entry as you update the diary; feel free to comment within each other’s Film Diaries, but keep your films under your own name.

You should update your Film Diary at least once a week. Simply respond to yourself through your own Diary (which will be your name inside the Film Diary Forum/Topic); your first entry will be the first in your Diary. For each update, enter “Film Diary Update Week Two,” etc., in the subject line. (If you update more than once in the same week, then title the second entry for that week “Update Week Two #2,” etc.)

VERY IMPORTANT: at the very least your Film Diary should include the two (or more) feature films you have chosen to view from that week’s assigned list; over the course of the semester you will write Film Reports for two of the assigned films [see below]. Even if you are writing a Film Report on a particular title, it should also be listed in the Film Diary, as a record of which two assigned feature films you view each week; rather than writing in your Film Diary about the two films you will write Reports about, after you list the basic credits for the film in your Diary, simply type something like, “See FR1 for my response to this film.”

Write a news story

Requirement

Your assignment is to write a news story from this audio recording of a news conference about an arrest by local police. Remember to text questions to the spokesperson.

Crime News Conference_1.m4aView in a new windowClick to view

Covering crime, accidents & courtrooms lecture notes

YOUR PREPARATION— do some background research, if at all possible, even on breaking stories.

  1. Preparing for the crime story — initial reporting often at the scene; most information comes from police, victim(s) and witness(es); think convergence (audio/video, digital camera); timing is important; always check the police report, but do your own reporting; check news library upon return from crime scene.
  2. Preparing for accident and fire stories — check the official report first; if you’re on the scene, you’ll need to get basic information (what hap- pened, where, victim information, injuries, witnesses).
  3. Preparing for the court story — most stories are follow-ups; often diffi- cult and complex, so ask attorneys and judges lots of questions before and/or after court sessions and during recesses.

WRITING THE STORY

  1. The crime story — chronological order vs. inverted pyramid; possible “so what” sidebars.
  2. Accident and fire stories — observe and actively solicit information; keep digital recorder and camera handy, and collect basic information; question person in charge; try to find and interview witnesses; try to find friends or relatives of the victims; interview the victims if possible; talk with others at the scene; be sensitive to victims and their families; sketch elements of the scene on paper; record your interviews.

Several tips for police stories:

  • Names, ages, addresses, condition of victims.
  • Witness accounts and/or police re-creation.
  • When and where accident occurred.
  • Why or how it happened, or who was at fault (as determined by officials).

Fires are more difficult and dangerous because they’re active, more confusing; fire tips:

  1. Location.
  2. Names, ages, addresses of those killed, injured, missing.
  3. Name of building owner or landowner.
  4. Value of building and contents, or land value.
  5. Whether building and contents were insured.
  6. When fire started, who reported, level of response.
  7. Cause of fire, if known.

The court story — news value is paramount.

  1. Avoiding libelous statements — accuracy is critical; ask lots of ques- tions; everything in open court is fair game, but no privilege for spectator comments during a recess.
  2. A typical first story — arrest and charges.
  3. Follow-up story: First court appearance — reporters must know about basics of law, federal and state court organization, and procedure.
  4. Follow-up story: Preliminary hearing — in some states, defendants are indicted by a grand jury.
  5. Follow-up story: Arraignment— pleas and plea bargaining happen at this stage; motions for disclosure or suppression of evidence, and for a change of venue, can follow.
  6. Follow-up story: Trial testimony — jury selection, opening state- ments, examination of witnesses (direct, cross, re-direct) including rebuttal witnesses, jury deliberation
  7. Follow-up story: Verdict — juries can “hang”; after a conviction, some juries can recommend a sentence; sentencing usually comes at a sentencing hearing

III. OTHER ISSUES IN CRIME AND COURT REPORTING

  1. The free-press/fair-trial controversy — the Sheppard case; O.J. Simpson case.
  2. Gag orders and closed trials — currently, courts generally support trials being open to the public and the media (Nebraska Press Association v. Stuart, Richmond Newspapers v. Virginia).
  3. Covering sex crimes.
  4. Sex crime victims — concerns about victim names being made public.Sex crime offenders — generally, proceedings are open except for some youthful witnesses.
  5. Press-bar guidelines — not legal contracts; many media groups are withdrawing because of concerns the guidelines could become mandatory.
  6. Cameras in the courtroom— generally allowed (in 47 states and in some lower federal courts).
  7. Coverage of minority groups — avoid gratuitous mentions of race in crime stories; also, sexual orientation should be off limits unless it is the focus of a story (Dahmer case in Milwaukee).
  8. Coverage of terrorism— alleged terrorists being held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
  9. Issues of taste and ethics.
  10. Reporting details of crimes.
  11. Reporting confessions and prior convictions.
  12. Identifying juveniles — editors must decide.

Creativity and Innovation

Creativity and Innovation

Educators strive to create a classroom that instills creativity and
innovation. In this discussion, you will think about the creative and
innovative instructional approach known as the the flipped classroom while
making direct connections to the Common Core State Standards and
teacher decision making based on student assessments. Reflecting on your
previous discussion on CCSS in Week Two as well as your previous discussions from EDU671: Fundamentals of Educational Research about the flipped classroom, you will complete the three parts of this discussion’s initial post.

There are three parts to this discussion, which are described below.
Part 1

  • Discuss how the flipped classroom idea can be used in conjunction with CCSS (Math or English Language Arts)
  • Describe ways you could incorporate technology used in the flipped classroom idea to support the Framework for 21st century learning in the classroom as it relates to decision making based on student assessments.

Part 2
Now, think about assessments you have created or used in the past to address the following:

  • Discuss if a school or teacher should use a
multimedia resource that is absolutely amazing in delivering both
content and assessment, but is not accessible.
  • Evaluate whether the resource must be excluded from a course if there are no reasonably equivalent accessible alternatives.

Part 3

Guided Response: Respond to at least two peers. Your
replies should include a question about the incorporation of CCSS and
the Framework for 21st Century learning in your peers’ posts and should
offer an additional resource for consideration that supports an
alternative viewpoint. Though two replies is the basic expectation, for
deeper engagement and learning, you are encouraged to provide responses
to any comments or questions others have given to you, including the
instructor. Responding to the replies given to you will further the
conversation and provide additional opportunities for you to demonstrate
your content expertise, critical thinking, and real world experiences
with this topic.
