Throughout your education, you have been asked to research topics and write papers, engage in thought-provoking discussions, consider diverse perspectives, and a host of other challenges that have required you to use both your discipline-specific skills as well as your soft skills. These are called transferable skills, and are skills that you develop that can be transferred and applied within your chosen career. Transferable skills are highly valuable and essential for career success.

Throughout this course, you have been working on a project that allowed you to demonstrate your understanding of the transferable skills. It is now time to submit your project/assignment and add a transferable skills reflection.

To complete this assignment, you will need to do the following:

Part I: Compiling Your Exemplar Project

• Compile all of your completed course project assignment deliverables. Place them in the proper order, and save them in a single Microsoft Word document.

Part II: Transferable Skills Self Reflection

1. In a minimum of 1 full page, using Microsoft Word, write an essay (full introduction and conclusion), which includes the following:
   • Describe the knowledge, skills and/or attitudes regarding each of the transferable skills that you’ve gained as a result of completing this particular project/assignment.
   • Discuss the ways that you are going to incorporate the transferable skills (the transferable skills that you showcased in your exemplary project) into your work within your chosen career field.
   • Describe your future goals based on the transferable skills that you’ve chosen to showcase.
   • Write your paper utilizing proper tone, spelling and grammar.
2. Once you have completed your reflection assignment, add it to the end of the document you compiled in part I. The self-reflection should be the last few pages of your exemplar project. If done correctly, everything will be one document!
   
3. Save the compiled document to a folder. Then, zip or compress the folder, and submit the zipped folder to the drop box.

Application Case: Inserting the Team Concept into Compensation—or Not

Sandy Caldwell, the new Human Resources Manager for Hathaway Manufacturing, wanted to improve teamwork at every level of the organization. As part of the process of implementing cultural change, Sandy introduced a new pay-for-performance system. The reaction to the change was immediate and “100% negative.”

12-14: Does the pay-for-performance plan seem like a good idea? Why or why not?

12-15: What advice would you give Regina and Sandy as they consider their decision?

12-16: What mistakes did they make in adopting and communicating the new salary plan? How might Sandy have approached this major compensation change a little differently?

12-17: Assuming the new pay plan was eventually accepted, how would you address the fact that in the new performance evaluation system, employees’ input affects their peers’ pay levels?

Continuing Case: Carter Cleaning Company – The Incentive Plan

12-18: Should this plan be extended to pressers in the other stores?

12-19: Should other employees (cleaner/spotters, counter people) be put on a similar plan? Why? Why not? If so, how exactly?

12-20: Is there another incentive plan you think would work better for the pressers? Describe it.

12-21: A store manager’s job is to keep total wages to no more than 30% of sales and to maintain the fuel bill and the supply bill at about 9% of sales each. Managers can also directly affect sales by ensuring courteous customer service and by ensuring that the work is done properly. What suggestions would you make to Jennifer and her father for an incentive plan for store managers or front-desk clerks?

Often students express interest in earning extra credit toward raising one or more exam grades. Further, some students want the freedom to be able to pick their own topics. That sounds like a great idea because it will make for much more interesting reading from my end.

As you know, this course has eight exams covering certain specified chapters in the textbook and a Final Exam which covers all but a few. If a student wants to raise a particular exam grade, he or she should review the chapters for that exam and choose a topic which applies to one of those chapters. Be creative and try researching something which interests you.

Example 1: If a student wants to raise his/her grade for Exam 1 (which covers Chapters 3 and 4), one topic on which to write a research paper might be to compare and contrast how artists portray space in two dimensional media through implied depth, linear perspective and atmospheric perspective.

Example 2: If a student wants to raise his/her grade for Exam 4 (which covers Chapters 12, 13 and 14), one topic on which to write a research paper might be architecture as an art form including discussing developments and processes that changed construction over the last two hundred years.

Example 3: If a student wants to raise his/her grade for Exam 5 (which covers Chapters 15, 16 and 17), one topic on which to write a research paper might be to compare and contrast the art of the Middle Ages to that of the Renaissance.

Because I’m giving students the leeway to choose their own topic(s), I just want you to run your paper idea by me BEFORE you write / submit anything. (Be sure to follow the guidelines spelled out in the Extra Credit section in the Syllabus). If you want to raise your Final Exam grade, you may develop a topic on any of the chapters from the text–again, just check with me first.

Each paper will potentially raise one exam grade and, theoretically, students may submit up to eight (which corresponds with the eight exam grades). However, a student may not earn more than 100 points on any exam for which that student has submitted extra credit work. For example, if a student earns an 80 on an exam and submits extra credit work to offset that grade, the highest number of extra credit points available for that exam would be 20 points (i.e., 80 exam points + 20 extra credit points = 100 total points).

[The paper should be double-spaced, written in Times New Roman 12 point font, and have 1″ margins on the top, bottom and sides. The paper should NOT have extra spaces between paragraphs, or include any images, headers, footers or title pages. (Feel free to use the above template which includes the proper formatting for extra credit papers). Further, papers should include at least three cited sources (one of which may be the text for this course)].

As this is a research paper, all quotes and / or ideas borrowed from outside sources should be cited (i.e., papers should have either footnotes, endnotes or parenthetical citations). Quotation marks should be used as appropriate and all papers should have a bibliography or list of references at the end of the document. I am not a stickler for proper citation form, but I will not tolerate plagiarism. If any student submits plagiarized work, they will no longer be eligible to submit extra credit papers. Further, students submitting plagiarized work may possibly receive an automatic “F” in the course and may be reported to the school for disciplinary action.

The article in the file

The request:

Summary Report on Sustainability: You will write a summary report on Environmental/Ecological Sustainability appearing in a scientific magazine or in a science journal such as -Scientific American Magazine, The Scientist, Science, Nature, etc. (2011-17). Check with me if you are not sure about your article/topic and its sources. The purpose of this summary report is to provide a brief account of the content of a scientific article on sustainability. You also need to write your own reflection to the article (last two paragraphs). Begin your assignment early and try to budget your time for writing and editing your summary. The sustainability assignment due date will be announced in advance.

Rubric for the Summary Report (20 pts.): This summary report will have three pages (double-spaced-typed pages). Use: white paper (8×11), Arial or Times New Roman font of size 12.

1st page is the Cover Page (6 pts):

On top of the 1st page, type Summary Report on Sustainability for your heading, below that type the title, author(s), date, name of publication, volume information, and finally on the next line your full name, and the current date.

oAbstract: on middle of the 1st page type Abstract. Under the abstract subtitle write 3 sentences explaining the paper’s important content: 1) the topic/concept being investigated, 2) the results obtained, and 3) your reflection. Therefore, you should start writing your abstract after you have written the entire summary report.

2nd and 3rd Pages ((14 pts): Write and organize the following content of your summary report on these pages:

Introduction: Briefly describe the topic and scope of the investigation being discussed in the paper.

Methods and Materials: Indicate the methods employed for observation or experimentation and materials used.

Results: Summarize important results found in the article.

Conclusion: Briefly cite the principle conclusions.

Reflection: Write your own reflection to the article and give reasons for your reflection.

Reference: Write the reference of the original research article at the end of your report.
