PAPER REQUIREMENTS:

Length: 10-12 FULL PAGES (10 is the minimum; 12 is the maximum). This 10-12 pages does NOT include the title page or bibliography. A full page is just what it sounds like- a page that is text from top to bottom. If you submit a paper that’s 9 pages plus two sentences on page 10, that’s not 10 pages. It’s 9 full pages.

Spacing: Double spaced.

Margins: Standard margins.

Font: 12-point Times New Roman (black).

Composition: Your paper should comprise a title page, introduction, main body, conclusion, and bibliography – in that order. As noted above, the title page and bibliography are not factored into the page count.

Citations: I prefer in-text citations but I won’t penalize any student who chooses to use footnotes or endnotes so long as they are correctly formatted. It is entirely your choice to use the method of citation you prefer.

Tips: Don’t include your abstract. Don’t include the annotations from your bibliography. Be sure to cite your sources very liberally – you should have several citations per page. If you submit a paper with few citations, you’ll be penalized. If you submit a paper with no citations, you’ll receive a 0 and probably fail this course. Occasionally, I have a student who doesn’t believe me and submits a final paper with no citations – that student always receives a 0 and fails the course.

Part I (15 points):

A
warehouse manager, Jane, needs to determine how many order pickers she
should staff. The daily demand is normally distributed with a mean of
58,855 orders and a standard deviation of 4876 orders. The number of
orders that order pickers pick daily is normally distributed with a mean
of 6012 orders and a standard deviation of 163 orders.

Design a
simulation to help Jane determine how many order pickers she should
hire so that demand is satisfied at least 97.5% of the time.

Part II (10 points):

Jane
has instructed her QA Department to inspect the picked orders for order
accuracy because sales has been reporting that many customers have
complaints about inaccurate orders. QA reports that the yield is
normally distributed with a mean of 98.8% and a standard deviation of
0.43% which Jane finds unsatisfactory. She has mandated a minimum yield
of 99%! The QA Department and Operations have started to design a Six
Sigma improvement project to increase the yield to at least 99% but this
will take months to complete.

In the meantime, Jane has ordered
QA to hire scanners who will inspect the orders and repair the
inaccurate orders. QA reports that this has been done in the past and
the scanners achieve a 100% yield on the scanned orders. Their output is
normally distributed with a mean of 2133 orders and a standard
deviation of 97 orders.

Design a simulation to help Jane determine how many order scanners she should hire to achieve the 99% minimum yield.

Note 1: Yields cannot exceed 100%

Pick a psychoactive drug (drug that affects the brain), investigate this drug, and write a summary in which you discuss the drug you researched. Your summary should discuss and cite the sources you found and provide answers to the questions posted below. Also discuss any other information you find interesting.

The drugs discussed in the book are the following:

ALCOHOL, HEROIN, NICOTINE, COCAINE, LSD, MARIJUANA

Feel free to pick any of them, or another similar drug (e.g. meth, morphine), or any other psychoactive drug you are interested in researching. Address these questions in your summary:

1. Which category does this drug belong to (depressants, opiates, stimulants, etc.)?
2. What is known about the effects of this drug in the brain and in the rest of the body? Which neurotransmitter(s) is/are associated with this drug?
3. What are some typical psychological and behavioral effects of this drug?
4. If you find other interesting information about the drug, tell us about that.

Once you have a topic, do the following:

1. Write a summary of your topic (approximately one page is fine), addressing the questions in the assignment, and also discussing any additional information you found about the drug. Find at least TWO SOURCES. Our textbook is fine as one of the sources. You can also use academic peer-reviewed journal articles, books, newspaper articles, films, academic websites (WIKIPEDIA DOES NOT COUNT FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT). The most credible websites are based on research findings and often end in .edu or .org. The best method for you for finding peer-reviewed journal articles is to use the library search tools such as Academic Search Complete. If you search for a particular key term (e.g. marijuana), you will usually get a list of journal article abstracts, often with direct links to the actual articles. Peer-reviewed articles typically contain subsections such as an abstract, introduction, methods, results and discussion. Sometimes they are “review articles” that review many studies (rather than report the results of an original experiment) and may not include all of these subsections, but you can still recognize them in the library search since they are labeled as an “Academic journal” (rather than “Periodical” which are not peer-reviewed).

2. Post your written summary on Canvas as a discussion post in the REPLY box below (by Sun Feb 12th midnight). List your sources in APA style at the end of your summary. (10 points)

3. Read other students’ summaries, and reply to one of them (by Tues Feb 14th midnight). You can ask questions, comment on their information, tell about your knowledge related to their topic, etc. (5 points)

Your summary must be IN YOUR OWN WORDS. Every time you use the words and/or ideas of an outside source, you must appropriately cite that source in APA style IN THE TEXT. YOU MUST ALWAYS INDICATE IN THE TEXT WHERE YOU GOT THE INFORMATION EVEN IF YOU WRITE IT IN YOUR OWN WORDS. When you cite a source in the text of your summary, use the name of the author(s) and publication year in parentheses. Here’s how:

Cocaine is a strong central nervous system stimulant (Smith, 2010). Alcohol, on the other hand, is a strong depressant (Zhang & Jones, 2001).

Or:

According to Smith (2010), cocaine is a strong central nervous system stimulant. In contrast, Zhang & Jones (2001) discuss the effects of a strong depressant, alcohol, on the central nervous system.

If there is no author (which may sometimes happen with websites), use the the first few words of the reference list entry (usually the title). Use double quotation marks. Examples:

For citations with no author:

A similar study was done of students learning to format research papers (“Using APA,” 2001).

No author & no date:

In another study of students and research decisions, it was discovered that students succeeded with tutoring (“Tutoring and APA,” n.d.).

In the year 2100, there was a young man named Jim who could travel through time. This young man has had serious infractions with the juvenile justice system. He has decided to travel back through time to start his life over.

He has a choice of two time periods. One is during the colonial period of America, and the other is during the early 21st century. Knowing Jim’s propensity for finding trouble, what would happen to him if he committed the crime of breaking and entering with the aggravating circumstances of assault during the colonial period? What would happen to him if he committed the same crime in the 21st century? This assignment will cover the history of the juvenile justice system, juvenile courts, and corrections, as well as theories that would be related to Jim and treatment options during both periods of time.

Jim has decided to stay in the 21st century. He has not been able to stay out of trouble and has broken into 2 homes and stolen the following items:

• The keys to a new car
• Five hundred dollars in cash
• An expensive watch

Again, he has come to the attention of the juvenile justice system. In this court, there are 2 opposing factors. The first factor depends upon a purely psychological view. The second factor depends upon a purely sociological view. These 2 factors will argue in court why he fits their reasoning of why he committed the crime.
