1. Using the graph and other images used in the article, answer the following questions:
   a. Who is the target audience?
   b. What claim is the image supporting?
   c. What shared history or cultural assumptions – or warrants – do the image(s) make?
   d. What is the supporting evidence?

2. Paging through a favorite magazine,find an ad that you find interesting and effective. Then imagine that you are the creative director of the team who will put this ad together. Write a memo to your staff describing the ad you wish to see created. Explain the persuasive function of each element in the ad and why you think it will work to sell the product you are advertising.

Choose one (1) of the three (3) reading selections from the list of topic choices below. The focus is on brief but important primary source material written by major authors. Read the selections as identified with each topic below. Write a three to four (3-4) paragraph essay (250 words minimum) which analyzes the “surprise ending” of the reading selection.

Topic Choices

 Reading selection from Descartes’ Discourse on the Method (Part IV). Descartes begins with a proof of one basic conclusion and ends with a proof of something much grander. Remember to focus on the surprise and point of realization, not the details of the philosophical argument. Read Part IV of the Discourse on the Method located at http://www.earlymoderntexts.com/authors/descartes.html. This is only four or five (4 or 5) pages of the larger work.

 Reading selection of Swift’s A Modest Proposal. It is essential to recognize the genre of this work, as discussed in our class text, which you should consult and cite. Swift promotes a radical solution, but subtle options are mentioned. You are looking for surprise and a point of realization. Read and focus on A Modest Proposal located at http://www.victorianweb.org/previctorian/swift/modest.html.

 Two (2) reading selections from Voltaire’s Candide. Consider how these readings start and end in terms of the action and the beliefs. You are looking for surprise and a point of realization. These selections can be found on pp. 834-835 in the textbook. In addition, consult the class text at pp. 815-817.

For the reading selection you choose:

1. Clearly state in your own words the “surprise ending” in the reading you selected. Clearly identify the point in the reading when you realized that there were elements in the reading that surprised you. Not all of the surprises come at the end.

2. Evaluate how successful the author was in convincing you to accept the validity of the “surprise ending” that was different from what you expected.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

 Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA Style format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions. (Note: Students can find APA style materials located in the course shell for reference)

Water Quality Report

Short reports are often used in environmental policy contexts to explain environmental issues to lay audiences. It is highly important that reports incorporate data and scientific information in a way that businesses, policymakers, and the general public can understand.

Your Water Quality Report

Your assignment is to write a 2-3 page, double-spaced report outlying the water quality of several sites within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed for consideration by the local government body.

Where contaminants present in your water samples? What might have been the source of these contaminants? Should the public be concerned? What can be down to reduce the possibility of water contamination?

When writing your report, you’ll include an overview of the water quality concerns, your research into the issue and your suggestions for action. This will be done through six labeled sections (Executive Summary, Problem Overview, Key Stakeholders, Agenda Setting, Conclusion, and References). Within your problem overview section, include a graph of results using your data from the lab.

I have listed my stock research below. I choose to first compare Walmart and Kroger since they are in similar industries, but I feel that Kroger (also called Dillions here in Kansas) has a much better reputation. However, that does not appear to affect their stock pricing. Walmart had both higher stock closing price and PE Ratio. A higher PE ratio can indicate investor confidence in the company or it may just indicate overpriced stock. Since Walmart has a higher closing price to match their high rate the first conclusion is more plausible. When comparing Walmart to their competitors through Mergent Online I found that their PE ratio is much higher, but so is their revenue. Kroger’s PE ratio is below the industry average. Due to this, I do not believe that either stock is overpriced. As an investor, I would choose Walmart over the peer choice.

For my next two stocks I compared UPS and FedEx. Both companies are in the airlines/air freight sector. When comparing these two I find that FedEx has lower revenues, lower income, but also lower liabilities. I feel that FexEx may be over priced and that going with UPS will be the better option. While the closing price was lower the PE ratio was higher. UPS also has a PE ratio higher than the industry average while FedEx is below.

Apple and Intel P/E ratios are both below the industry average but there are two major outliers in Hitachi, Ltd with 86.88 and Oracle Corp with 52.06. If we were to remove those two companies when calculating the industry average it would be 18.27. With that in mind, I do believe Apple would be a good company to invest in.

The other two comparisons were Toyota and Ford. Here it is easy to see Toyota would be the better option. Not only are they above the industry average for PE ratio they have a higher closing price.

Here are the Stocks I have chosen with their calculated P/E’s.

I used the P/E Ratio per Sector provided by NYU Stern School of Business to find the Industry information.

When looking for competitors for Netflix I looked for Hulu. Hulu is listed under NBC which is listed under GE. I think that in comparison to GE, Netflix is overpriced. But compared to the Entertainment industry it appears to be fairly priced.

I believe my choice stock AbbVie to be fairly priced in comparison to its competitor Johnson & Johnson. They both are underpriced as far as the Healthcare Industry is concerned coming in at less than 50%.

My choice stock in Apparel, Nike appears to be fairly priced in comparison to its competitor Crocs. They are both earning well above the industry standard.

Though my choice stock Meredith Corp. seems to be overpriced in comparison to its peer stock, a little over double the amount, it is priced fairly in relation to other stocks in the Advertising industry.
