Social justice problems may affect different populations in unique ways. Social workers must understand the special challenges that may arise when providing services and supports for these populations, as well as the policies that may address the social justice problems that impact them.

Assignment Description

The Exploration of Social Justice assignment due in this unit is in preparation for your course project. The purpose of this assignment is to explore a social justice problem that addresses a specific population or subgroup (for example, access to health care, access to social services, immigration, or veterans’ mental health and services). This should be a problem that presents current challenges for social workers providing services and support. You will need to investigate the various forms and mechanisms of oppression and discrimination within this social justice problem and identify policies that are currently enacted to address this problem. Ultimately, you will choose one of these policies to analyze as the topic for your federal policy analysis course project.

To ensure that this is a viable scholarly topic, explore the literature in your area of interest by doing article and book searches through Capella University Library databases and other electronic resources, including government, educational, and organizational Web sites. Exploring scholarly, respected literature will be the preliminary work for this project. The Library of Congress will be an invaluable resource for your research during this project.

Assignment Instructions

To complete this assignment:

1. Choose a social justice problem that addresses a specific population or subgroup. Using the Capella library, government, educational, and organizational Web sites, find scholarly research about your topic.
2. Analyze the forms and mechanisms of oppression and discrimination toward a specific population or subgroup that exist within this social justice topic (for example, race, religion, disabilities, gender orientation, socioeconomic status, or access to services). What impact has oppression and discrimination had on the population?
3. Articulate the ethical dilemmas or problems that surface when discussing your selected social justice problem. Use the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics and the Social Work Speakspolicy textbook to guide your analysis.
4. Analyze the policy implications for this social justice problem.
   • Research and describe current, enacted policies that seek to address this social justice problem. These policies must be passed legislation that is currently in practice. Legislation can to be at the federal or state level, but ultimately your course project will require you to select a federal policy.
   • Analyze how feasibly these policies address the needs of the specific population/subgroup. Do the policies effectively address the social justice problem? Provide a rationale that includes scholarly, peer-reviewed research.
   • Assess the impact these policies have had on the specific population or subgroup. What policy constraints exist for this population?
   • Discuss advocacy methods for the selected social justice problem.
5. Summarize how effective or ineffective the current policies are in addressing the social justice problem.

Nearly everyone probably knows someone who places other people’s health, welfare, and safety before their own. When they do this, they can lose contact with their own needs, desires, and sense of self-worth.

1. Please watch the movie When a Man Loves a Woman. It is available from Amazon On-Demand rental for streaming or download and Netflix DVD rental. You may also be able to find the movie at your local public library or video rental store.
2. Refer to the characteristics of codependent people as discussed in the assigned weekly readings. Choose three of the characteristics to examine.
3. Search the AUO library and include at least one peer-reviewed journal article on treatment for codependence to use for research.
4. Based on the character of the husband in the movie When a Man Loves a Woman, your weekly readings and the research article you reviewed, write a 4-5 page paper that addresses the following for each of the three characteristics you picked:
   1. Explain three codependent characteristics. Explain why you have chosen each particular characteristic. Provide three examples, one for each characteristic, of how those codependent characteristics specifically apply to the husband’s character in the film.
   2. Evaluate how each codependent characteristic is detrimental to this person’s ability to establish and maintain healthy relationships.
   3. Analyze how the codependent behavior has evolved within the substance abuse environment.

Below is a series of six (6) tasks to complete using the basic elements of design. All work (except for task B) must be completed by hand. Use a pencil (shading with ink will give you fits) and bright white, unlined paper. Most importantly: have fun!

A. Name the Line: Create five boxes that are 2″ wide and 3″ high. Create a different line in each box then write a name below each box that describes the line.

B. Color Wheel: Create a color wheel using any kind of medium you’d like. Include primary, secondary, and intermediate colors.

C. Create a Shape: Create two boxes as you did for task A. In box 1, create a design with geometrical shapes. In box 2, create a design with organic shapes. Now draw the boxes again with the same shapes in them. In box 1, shade the positive space. In box 2, shade the negative space.

D. Texture: Create another two boxes. Draw different types of texture in each box, and describe the texture underneath each box.

E. Value Scale: Create five more boxes. Leave the box on the far right blank; it will be the lightest in value. Shade the box on the far left completely black; this will be the darkest value. Shade in the three remaining boxes to show a gradual change from lightest to darkest.

F. Form: Draw and correctly shade the four basic forms: cube, cone, sphere, and cylinder.
