Portfolio Project Assignment Choice #1: Cloud Computing Strategy

You are the IT director for XYZ Manufacturing. Your company is a B2B (business-to-business) organization that supplies auto parts to General Motors. There are 200 employees at XYZ Manufacturing with a headquarters in Detroit, Michigan, and field offices in Omaha, Nebraska; Austin, Texas; and Orlando, Florida. There are over 10,000 items in the inventory for XYZ Manufacturing and you receive raw material (i.e. steel, plastic, wiring, etc.) from China.

XYZ Manufacturing has been struggling for years with inadequate computer resources to track inventory and handle user requests from internal management, orders and invoices from General Motors, orders and invoices from your suppliers, and management reports. There is clearly an inability to store and retrieve complex “big data,” and recently there have been frequent security breaches. Your CIO is extremely frustrated with this situation and is looking for an alternative approach to providing IT services. She has asked you for input on this investigation.

Write a paper that describes the advantages and disadvantages that cloud computing offers to your organization. Include a sensible, detailed strategy to migrate to cloud computing, addressing the issues of performance, scalability, and economic factors.

Your paper should be 8 pages in length and conform to Writing and APA Requirements. Include at least five credible references.

Module I:

1. Introduction: What does the company do? How did it get started? How does it add value? Who are the
customers for which it competes? What risks does the company face? What kind of business is it – does it
primarily produce goods or services? In what industry does it operate? What is it known for? Include the
company’s sales data, the location of their headquarters. Be sure that your opening paragraph engages the

2. History: Write one paragraph that provides pertinent historical information about the company.

3. Mission, Vision, & Values: Provide your chosen company’s stated mission statement in their own words. If
your company has a stated vision statement then provide it verbatim; otherwise use your own words to
explain their vision based on your research.

4. Mission Statement Analysis: Does your company’s mission statement align with the textbook’s definition of a
good mission statement? Why or why not? Is it just vague “puffery”? Is it just a bunch of buzzwords? Does it
actually do a good job of explaining why the company exists?

Given recent business growth, Jon has become concerned about internal and external security threats. He has asked you to prepare a memo with ten ideas to improve or enhance internal and external security. Jon realizes that you are not aware of all of the security precautions and activities currently in place, but he expects your list will include some new ideas.
