Synthesis Essay

Synthesis writing is a written discussion that draws on one or more sources. In an academic synthesis, you make explicit the relationships that you have inferred among separate sources. Go beyond summary to make judgments – judgments based, of course, on critical reading of the sources. Go beyond the critique of individual sources to determine the relationship among them.

Recommended length: 4-5 pages, double-spaced in 12pt font. APA Format.

Synthesis Essay: 15% (SLOs Chapter 1 a)

Serving primarily as a foundation for the research essay, the synthesis essay requires students to explore their topic of interest through reading several selections in their Dialogue reader. After summarizing specific arguments on their topic, and analyzing the claims of these authors, students are asked to reflect on key ideas and demonstrate their critical thinking skills through the formulation of a working thesis related to their topic. Recommended length: 4-5 pages. APA Format.

Purpose: To summarize the claims of various authors on a specific topic and develop a clear thesis in relation to your topic.

Audience: An academic audience that includes the authors of the readings and other interested in the issue upon which you are focusing.

Questions for Consideration and Topic Exploration: After reviewing chapter 1 on critical and conflict theories, utilize these theoretical ideas to explain a current global issue related to the food, fuel, or water crisis. How does the theory help explain the situation? What would Marx and Engels, Ehrenreich, or Weber (choose at least one of the theorists) say about this current situation?

The scratch of a pen

For your first paper, you will write a five-page essay addressing the following question from The Scratch of a Pen:

In
1763, what new factors pushed Indigenous peoples to join Pan-Indian
movements such as Pontiac’s War (consider issues such as the “Middle
Ground” in your answer)? What new factors pushed Indigenous peoples
into new wars against one another (consider the westward movement of
Indian Nations as well as events in Louisiana)? Why didn’t the
Pan-Indian efforts succeed?

Your
paper should include an introduction with a thesis statement, detailed
evidence from the book, and a conclusion. When quoting from the book,
be sure to use quotation marks and cite the page number in parenthesis.
Plagiarism will result in a failing grade and possibly a “0” on the
paper.

Your
essays must be typed, double-spaced, and carefully proofread. Please
use one-inch margins and 12 pt., Times New Roman font. You will not
need a title page. The final papers you turn in should be polished
essays, not rough drafts. They should be thoughtfully organized and
free of basic grammatical and spelling errors.

Your essay will be graded holistically based upon the following rubric:

A: The essay exceeds expectations and demonstrates an exceptional understanding of the book, The Scratch of a Pen,
and other relevant course material. The content of the essay is
historically accurate and reveals an excellent understanding of the
themes, topics, and events covered by the course and of historical
concepts such as change over time, chronological thinking, and cause and
effect. The essay effectively answers all components of the question
using specific examples (evidence) from The Scratch of a Pen.
It is well organized: the introduction clearly states the thesis,
topic sentences refer back to the overall argument and provide
transition between paragraphs, and the conclusion explores the
significance of the topic. The argument is compelling, offers original
insight, and is strongly supported by evidence from the book. The essay
is polished and free of grammatical and spelling errors.

B: The essay exceeds expectations and demonstrates a very good understanding of the book, The Scratch of a Pen,
and other relevant course material. The content of the essay is
historically accurate and reveals a capable understanding of the themes,
topics, and events covered by the course and of historical concepts
such as change over time, chronological thinking, and cause and
effect. The essay effectively answers all components of the question
using specific examples (evidence) from The Scratch of a Pen.
It is well organized: the introduction states the thesis, topic
sentences refer back to the overall argument and provide transition
between paragraphs, and the conclusion explores the significance of the
topic. The examples from the book effectively support the argument.
The essay is well written and free of grammatical and spelling errors.

C: The essay meets expectations and demonstrates an adequate understanding of the book, The Scratch of a Pen, and
the relevant course material. The content of the essay is historically
accurate, with few errors, and reveals a competent understanding of the
themes, topics, and events covered by the course and of historical
concepts such as change over time, chronological thinking, and cause and
effect. The essay answers all components of the question using at
least some examples (evidence) from The Scratch of a Pen.
It has an introduction that states the thesis and an identifiable
conclusion. The examples from the book support the argument. The paper
is nicely written and contains few grammatical mistakes.

D: The essay is below expectations and demonstrates an inadequate understanding of the book, The Scratch of a Pen, and
the relevant course material. It displays little understanding of
historical concepts such as change over time, chronological thinking,
and cause and effect, and it contains significant historical
inaccuracies. The essay fails to address the question in its entirety
and includes no specific examples from the
book. Furthermore, it is not well organized: it lacks either an
introduction or a conclusion, and the paragraphs are not organized under
topic sentences that logically flow from one to the next. The paper is
not grammatically correct and needs to be edited.

F: The essay is unacceptable and shows little understanding of the book, The Scratch of a Pen, and
the relevant course material. Historical concepts such as change over
time, chronological thinking, and cause and effect are missing from the
paper, which also contains major historical inaccuracies. It fails to
address the question on even a basic level and includes no specific
examples from the book. The essay has no argument and lacks structure. It is not grammatically correct and needs to be edited.

Points will be determined by the following rubric:

Content
– 50/100 points (The content of the essay is historically accurate and
demonstrates an excellent understanding of the themes, topics, and
events covered by the course and of historical concepts such as change
over time, chronological thinking, and cause and effect. The argument
is convincing and supported by appropriate evidence.)

Organization
– 30/100 points (The introduction has a strong thesis statement, and
topic sentences refer back to the argument and provide transition
between paragraphs. The conclusion answers the “so what?” question.)

Editing – 20/100 points (The essay is polished and free of grammatical and spelling errors.)

Digital forensic

Hide Submission Folder Information

Project 2

For the purpose of this Project, you are still the InfoSec Specialist for the Greenwood Company. Consider this project a continuation of the work you performed in Project 1. In this portion of the investigation, you are ONLY collecting the physical evidence. You will NOT be handling the digital data during this stage of the investigation. (This step will be discussed in the Final Project.) You should limit your “care and handling” of each piece of evidence to the physical handling of the digital container.

With the scenario in mind, you are to write a report to your supervisor, thoroughly providing a response to the following questions (in paragraph format, properly citing outside research, where appropriate) to both parts of the project:

Part I: Overview/Case Summary

  1. Write a short summary of the incident that has occurred and establish what permissions/authorities you have before you search Mr. McBride’s former Company work area.

Part II: Physical Evidence Acquisition:

  1. Look at the photo of Mr. McBride’s work area. (See file attachment Work_Area.jpg)
  1. Identify three (3) potential items of digital evidence you see in the photo.
  2. For EACH item of digital evidence you identified, describe in first person what steps you took to collect the items (with emphasis on your care and handling of that item consistent with digital forensic best practices described in the module content/weekly readings). You should documenting these steps in a detailed way that will mitigate questions, concerns, or a basic lack of information that will call your processes into question in court.
  3. For each item, explain what potential use that item would be to your investigation (e.g., what type of data that item might hold.)
  1. Look at the photo of Mr. McBride’s work area. (See file attachment Work_Area.jpg)
  1. Identify three (3) potential items of non-digital evidence you see in the photo.
  2. For EACH item of non-digital evidence you identified, describe how you would collect each item, within standards and best practices described in your module content/weekly readings.
  3. For each item, explain what potential use that item would be to your investigation (e.g., what type of data that item might hold.)
  1. Detail in your report how you secured the collection of evidence after removing it from the original scene (the desk) and prior to sending it for analysis. Describe the security procedures in place as well as any environmental protections (specific to computer/digital devices) that are in place within the storage area.
  2. Look at the Evidence Custody Document (See file attachment Evidence Custody Document.doc) and item photographs (Items-seized (pics).pptx). Read the Evidence Custody Document prepared by one of your co-workers in which he is attempting to document the seizure of the three (3) items pictured in the accompanying photos. Did your co-worker adequately describe each item? What could you add to the descriptions, and for which items (based on what you see in the photos) to make them more complete and serve as an example to your co-worker of what they SHOULD look like (how they should be described)?

Project Requirements:

  • Paper should be submitted as a basic report memo HOWEVER, an APA-formatted cover page, in-text citations, and reference page is required. (See the following link for memo writing guidelines: http://www.umuc.edu/writingcenter/writingresources/effective_memos.cfm
  • Each questions should be answered with a minimum of 1-2 paragraphs, so do your research, be specific, be detailed, and demonstrate your knowledge; submit your project to the assignments folder.
  • Answers to the above questions should be submitted in a single document (.DOC/.DOCX, .RTF, or .PDF), with answers separated and/or numbered in respect to the question, so as to make it clear which question is being answered;
  • The submission should have a cover page, including course number, course title, title of paper, student’s name, date of submission, and submit to the assignments folder.
  • Format: 12-point font, single-space, one-inch margins;
  • It is mandatory that you do some research, and utilize outside resources! You must have a reference page that is consistent with APA citation style (see https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/ for help).
