The Assignment: History provides important insights that enable us to understand contemporary events, challenges, and dilemmas. Indeed, one might argue that many contemporary dilemmas can be explained or more fully understood by reference to the effects of past historical developments. Choose two of the following issues and discuss how the historical developments you have studied in this course influence, explain, or help to better understand them. Feel free to suggest another issue (or issues) that is not on this list, but do not choose the problem of ethnic violence that erupted in the breakup of Yugoslavia, since you will have already discussed that in the debate! Be sure to support your claims with evidence!

• The Israeli-Palestinian conflict
• The persistence of gender and racial inequality (including sexual harassment and sexual violence) in the modern world
• Environmental degradation/climate change
• Poverty and underdevelopment in states that were former European colonial possessions in Africa
• The rise of nationalist and/or illiberal political parties and groups in contemporary Europe
• Terrorism

The paper allows you to make use of your texts — the basic text (Hunt et. al.), the collection of documents (Lualdi) and the two novels assigned for the course. You are also free to consult other materials, although you are not required to do so. If you use direct quotations or paraphrase, be sure to use a brief in-text citation.

Review chapters 17-19, in Changing the U.S. Health Care System: Key Issues in Health Services Policy and Management.

Using the framework of your major discipline, write an explanatory synthesis about a past event considered very important to understand within the history of your field (perhaps its founding, perhaps its application on an important occasion, perhaps in helping to solve a problem
that concerns all of us). Your audience would be an academic journal’s future anniversary issue
which collects several different articles about that event. You will be required to use at least 4 sources for your piece. The editorial staff of the journal recommends you consult Writing and Reading Across the Curriculum Ch. 4 for potential ways to
structure the article, especially p. 101’s “Guidelines For Writing Syntheses” and p. 115-116’s “Organize a Synthesis by Idea, Not by Source.”

Cape of Good Hope, are the two (2) greatest events recorded in the
history of [human] kind” – Adam Smith, in The Wealth of Nations,1776.
Think about why he and many other notables supported this statement,
especially concerning the discovery of America. What was so important
about this New World across the Atlantic Ocean from Europe? How did it
change globalization in terms of trade, culture, societies, innovations,
new and old world exchanges, and in other ways?

You have
already developed a thesis statement and developed an outline in which
you identify three (3) main points relevant to your topic. Now you will
develop the final paper in which you explore your main points in detail.

Write a three to five (3-5) page paper in which you:

1. Introduce your paper with your previously crafted thesis statement.
2. Identify three (3) major aspects that demonstrate Old and New World
   exchanges. Explain your responses with specific examples and details.
3. Identify three (3) specific groups that were affected by this global
   event and provide two (2) examples for each group describing how the
   group was affected.
4. Summarize how this discovery affected the life of the average
   working American during the colonial period. Use specific examples and
   details.
5. Use at least three (3) academic references besides or in addition to the textbook. Note: Wikipedia and other similar websites do not qualify as academic resources.
