Exploring A Different Culture

Unit II: Essay – Exploring A Different Culture

For the Unit II Assignment you will be answering a series of response questions applying concepts you learned in this unit reading (culture and socialization) to a culture different from your own.

For this assignment, choose a culture different from your own and complete Part A, Part B, and Part C as follows:

Part A: Introduce the Culture and Identify Folkways, Values, and Taboos (Mores)

  • What culture did you research? Provide a brief introductory and background about the culture you researched.
  • Why did you choose to research that particular culture?
  • What is at least one interesting folkway in the culture?
  • What is at least one important value in the culture?
  • What is at least one taboo or more in the culture?

*Please make sure to use concepts and terminology found in your textbook about culture and remember to distinguish which things are the folkways, values, and taboos in your assignment.

Part B: Identify Two Agents of Socialization

What are at least two agents of socialization that are central in teaching some of the particular cultural folkways, values, and taboos you presented?

*Please, make sure to use terminology and concepts found in the textbook regarding agents of socialization as part of your discussion.

Part C: Reflection

What impact did studying this culture have on you? For example, did it reduce stereotypes you held about the culture or give you a greater appreciation for the culture? Did it help you understand more about the differences and similarities between your culture and the one you researched and help to differentiate between the different types of norms?

For this Unit II essay assignment, ensure you follow the requirements below:

  1. Answer all of the questions listed in Part A, Part B, and Part C in your assignment.
  2. Please answer the response questions in essay-style format. You will not be rewriting each question and answering it. You will be creating an essay that addresses the response questions.
  3. Use sociological terms and concepts from the textbook reading in your essay to demonstrate you understand and can apply the concepts.
  4. Cite the textbook at least once and cite a web source at least once in the essay, so the assignment requires two sources. APA style in-text citations are required to show how the textbook and the source were used in your essay. An APA style reference list containing the textbook, the web source, and any other sources you cited in the assignment is also required. The following tutorial from CSU’s Writing Center on in-text citations is a great helpful resource. Click on the link to view this tutorial: http://columbiasouthern.adobeconnect.com/intextcitations/

The essay should be approximately two to three pages and should use the following APA style components: APA style title page, double-spaced, 1-inch margins, and 12-point font.

Note: The rubric for this assignment contains a task section. Your task score is based on the following: (a) the page requirement is met; (b) whether unit terms and concepts are directly identified and specifically labeled; (c) all parts of each question are directly answered and clearly demonstrated; and (d) whether the textbook was cited.

The rubric grading criteria involves relevant, informative, and on-topic content. The criteria are based on whether you use in-depth critical analysis and remain on the topic of the questions being asked in the assignment instructions.

Please contact your instructor if you have any questions about the assignment or the unit’s course material.

Week 5 discussion one

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, review the Cover Letters PDF (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. provided by the Ashford University Office of Career Services and the What Is a Cover Letter? (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. and Writing the Dreaded Cover Letter (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. online resources. It is recommended that you also review the e-book by Noble (2004) and the How to write cover letters (examples) (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. video which include more information and a number of sample cover letters to assist you.

For this discussion post, you will use the knowledge you have gained about personality, the career specific reports you have created in the previous weeks’ discussions, and assessments associated with various fields of psychology you have studied to help you to choose and develop a cover letter for a job in the human services sector. To begin, determine what type of job within the human services sector related to personality psychology is of interest to you. Using career websites, including those listed on the Ashford Career Services Job Search (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. website, and/or other third-party search engines such as the American Psychological Association’s PsycCareers (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. website, Monster.com (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., Indeed.com (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., and SimplyHired.com (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. Once you have found a suitable job posting, carefully review the requirements and note these for inclusion in your cover letter. Before you begin designing your cover letter, review the required readings, videos, and websites to help you determine how best to formulate it. Within the letter, you will address the person or title of the person that is listed as the contact for the job in the job posting. As you draft your cover letter, consider the elements within the job post and use your knowledge of personality theory to make yourself appear to be the best candidate for the job. Assess the various types of personality measurements that might be most effective in the position listed and mention how you might use these on the job. Once you have developed your letter, save it as a document and attach it to your discussion post. In the discussion post itself, copy and paste the link to the job posting for which you wrote your cover letter. Describe your experience(s) writing the cover letter including the ways in which you may have attempted to manipulate the reader to get the best response. Analyze and describe any ethical issues that could be associated with this process.

3 slide law powerpoint

Find 3 crimes that classify as “crime against property.” Each of the 3 slides will focus on one of the crimes. Respond to the following questions for each of the three crimes that you select:

  • Define the elements of the crime, including the actus reus and mens rea for each crime. Make sure to cite a state criminal statute for each crime.
  • Identify why the crime is classified as a crime against property.
  • Describe a factual scenario, either fictional or true in fact, in which the crime is committed. Should there be different penalties for crimes against property, people, and public order? Why? Do you believe that crimes in one category are more serious? Support your argument with examples as to why these crimes are similar or different.
  • Referring to your factual scenario, how would a person’s ideas about multiculturalism and diversity impact the penalties for the crime? For example, depending on the crime a defendant’s sentence might be decided by either a judge or a jury. Based on the particular juror or judge’s socio-economic, cultural or religious backgrounds, do you think that these individuals have certain opinions as to how stringent a defendant’s sentence should be?
  • Provide your opinion as to whether judges should be given wide discretion in determining the appropriate sentence for a defendant.
  • Your 3-slide requirement is excluding your introduction and reference slides.
  • Minimum of 5 lines of content per slide to answer each point above
  • Use bullets for your main points.
  • Use speaker notes to fully explain what is being discussed in the bullet points as though you are presenting to an audience.

A current social issue in the world

You will be picking a topic that is a current social issue in the world. The topic choice is up to you, but it should be something that is in the modern era. Some examples would be sex trafficking, companies that use undocumented labor and the issues those workers face, water shortages, etc. You will need a proposal paragraph, full citation of the sources that you want to include, and descriptions of those books

You should have at least 3 sources on your Project Proposal, and they need to be scholarly (see first bullet point below).

For topics that have book sources written about them, you should consult at least 1 physical book. In the proposal, after the FULL CITATION of the source, you will let me know how the book would help you accomplish the research paper. I do not expect you to read all of the (full) books you list, but a good way to gage their effectiveness would be to do the following:

  • Google the author to make sure they are an EDUCATED professional who is credible in their field. You would be surprised how many people write books/articles who have no business spreading their opinions and trying to parade them as fact. For example, I myself am a historian, with degrees in history from a credible and respected school. If you go to my website, you can see I have experience in my field and credibility. That being said, I would write a book that has to do with history or a closely related field…. but I wouldn’t be a credible source about psychology, math, or physics because I have no educational or work experience in those fields.
  • Read the titles of the chapters in the book. Generally, that helps you decide first if it is a good match for what your research paper would be about. Also, the index and the descriptions in the book help you determine if it will even help. If you are looking at articles, look at the abstract at the beginning. JSTOR has really good articles that you may choose to use.
  • Read a chapter of the book, and skim 1 or 2 others. It is important for you to read something from the book, so you can have something to tell me in the paragraphs you are writing under each book. A good description is like the one in the Writing Assignments folder; substantial in length, and in content. Writing 3-4 sentences will not get you a high score. In each paragraph, let me know whether the source is primary or secondary. If you are using an article, you should read a few sections of it, or an entire few chapters.

Please make sure that your sources are listed in ABC order by last name of the author and that they are FULL citations:

Last Name of Author, First Name of Author. Title of Book, But Not Underlined. Publisher: Publishing City. Year. Medium (Print, eBook, etc.).

For this project you may notice that you do not have a minimum word or page requirement. You know how much information you need to provide me with so that I can get a good sense of your selected book sources and how they relate to your selected topic. I would aim for 12-15 sentences per source.

I also attached an example of an “A” Paper Proposal

The Quality of Financial Information

Referencing this week’s readings and lecture, describe the quality issues related to reporting revenue. What is the importance of understanding various inventory valuation methods in determining the quality of reported profits?

Lecture:

Evaluating the Quality of Financial Reports

The collapse of Enron in the early 2000s, which was a result of massive financial manipulation, gave rise to a new era of financial reporting supervision with the establishment of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act in 2002. The Act required all executives to give certified and accurate financial information. Various mechanisms were put in place to reduce financial accounting irregularities (Cunningham, 2005). Managers are therefore required to have a clear understanding of the regulations put in place and the bodies which enforce them in order to conform with them accordingly.

Issuance of financial reports and sale of securities to the public is monitored by such organizations as:

  1. The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB)
  2. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and
  3. The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FIRA)

The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) has developed the financial accounting standards to be used in the U.S. since 1973. Its function is to oversee the preparation of financial reports by non-governmental entities. FASB ensures that financial statements contain information relevant for sound decision making. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has been charged with the statutory authority of establishing reporting standards for U.S. public companies. Although it does not develop the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), it has power to monitor financial reporting. The SEC seeks its authority from three security laws: The Securities Act of 1933 (SEC, 2012b), The Securities Exchange Act of 1934 (SEC, 2012c), The Investment Company Act of 1940 (SEC, 2012a), The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SEC, 2005), and The Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010 (SEC, 2014).

The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FIRA) regulates securities firms conducting business with the public in the U.S. The International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) develops and Publishes International Financial Reporting Standards through the help of its 15-full time members from different countries working with stakeholders all over the world.

The usefulness of financial reports to readers depends on report quality. The conceptual framework for financial reporting categorizes qualitative characteristics of financial reports into two broad categories: fundamental qualitative characteristics, which include relevance and faithful representation, and enhancing qualitative characteristics, which make financial reports more useful and include comparability, timeliness, verifiability, and understandability. Presentation of financial reporting is limited by materiality and cost constraints. There exist differences in U.S. reporting requirements and the international requirements, although efforts have been undertaken to congregate the U.S. GAAP rules with the international financial reporting rules (Oxford Analytica, 2009). Differences in U.S. reporting requirements and international financial reporting are evident in terms of asset value, revenue recognition, research and development, inventory and discontinued operations.

It is a requirement by law that financial statements of a public company be audited by an external auditing body that reviews the company’s operations and the financial statements to ensure that they are accurate and are in conformity with proper internal controls. They also help cross-check financial statements for creative accounting tricks that companies can use to mislead the public. These include false reporting of revenue, assets, expenses and liabilities.

carter cleaning services/great leaders

Part 1 – short answers only

The New Benefit Plan

Carter Cleaning Centers has
traditionally provided only legislatively required benefits for its employees.
These include unemployment compensation, Social Security, and workers’
compensation (which is provided through the same insurance carrier that insures
the stores for such hazards as theft and fire). The principals of the
firm—Jack, Jennifer, and their families—have individual, family-supplied health
and life insurance. Jennifer can see several potential problems with the
company’s policies regarding benefits and services. One is turnover. She wants to
study whether similar companies’ experiences with providing health and life
insurance benefits enable these firms to reduce employee turnover and perhaps
pay lower wages. Jennifer is also concerned that her company has no formal
vacation or paid days off or sick leave policies. Informally, at least, it is
understood that employees get 1 week’s vacation after 1 year’s work, but in the
past the policy regarding paid vacations for days such as New Year’s Day and
Thanksgiving Day has been very inconsistent. Sometimes employees who had been
on the job only 2 or 3 weeks were paid fully for one of these holidays, while at
other times employees who had been with the firm for 6 months or more had been
paid for only half a day. She also wonders whether it would be advisable to
establish some type of day care center for the employees’ children. Many of
them have no place to go during the day (they are preschoolers) or have no
place to go after school; she wonders whether a day care benefit would be in
the best interests of the company.

Questions

13-21. Draw up a policy statement regarding vacations, sick
leave, and paid days off for Carter Cleaning Centers.

13-22. what would you tell Jennifer are the advantages and
disadvantages to Carter Cleaning Centers of providing its employees with
health, hospitalization, and life insurance programs?

13-23.Would you advise establishing some type of day care
center for the Carter Cleaning employees? Why or why not?

Part 2

  1. The response has an appropriate length, which should be more than 8-10 lines (at least 4 paragraphs if possible
  2. The response is well written, reflecting clarity of thought, as well as correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling

Watch the following videos which represent two very different individuals generally considered to be great leaders.

After watching these videos, respond to the following questions based on what you see in the videos:

  • In your opinion, what leader characteristics do you think best describe Vince Lombardi?
    • In your opinion, which leadership style or combination of styles do you think best represent Vince Lombardi? Explain.
  • In your opinion, what leader characteristics do you think best describe Howard Schultz?
    • In your opinion, which leadership style or combination of styles do you think best represent Howard Schultz? Explain.
  • In your opinion, how are these two leaders similar?
  • In your opinion, how are these two leaders different?
