ENG220CL Journeys in Narrative

ENG220CL—Short Writing Assignment 3 Guidelines
Guidelines
This short writing assignment should be a 400-500 word essay that conforms strictly to
conventional MLA formatting standards, i.e., double-spaced, 1” margins on all four sides,
12pt. Times-Roman font, etc.
Sample Brainstorm Process for a Compare/Contrast Analysis
Consider, for example, a hypothetical compare/contrast analysis on castles (which yours is
not on): Let’s say that you narrow your focus to a famous castle in Scotland (topic 1) with a
famous castle in France (topic 2). Obviously, the two castles will have some characteristics
that are similar (comparing) and some characteristics that are different (contrasting). To
keep your analysis consistently parallel (and to avoid killing its flow), it is required that the
same criteria are used equally to analyze both topics. This hypothetical example will
compare and contrast (1.) the historical functions/effectiveness as military fortresses, (2.)
the functions/effectiveness as a place of residence [including for whom], and (3.) the
contemporary importance (if any) for official state functions and/or tourism FOR BOTH
TOPICS. When the criteria is criteria is clearly identified in the analysis’ thesis statement (as
is the case in sample below), it becomes what is called a roadmap or blueprint plan for the
writing assignment (required).

Will be turned into TURNITIN

Sample Thesis Statement
Breakdown*:Let’s see the component breakdown of the sample thesis above.
(a). Topic(s): Kingdom of Narnia and the Island of Neverland
(b). ARGUABLE Opinion on the Topic(s): Kingdom of Neverland is a better financial bargain.
(c). Criteria #1: Cost of Travel
(d). Criteria #2: Cost of Accommodation
(e). Criteria #3: Cost of Tourist Attractions
* Your thesis statement (which will differ greatly in content from this sample),
must also contain a representation of every component listed above, i.e.,
components (a.) through (e.). Since this is a course themed on travel, let’s
utilize a travel metaphor for clarification.
Remember, you are the writer, and your instructor is the primary reader (audience):
 In the actual thesis statement, components (a.) to (b.). metaphorically INFORM THE
READER OF WHERE THE AUTHOR IS TAKING THEM.
 In the actual thesis statement, components (c.) to (e.) metaphorically INFORM THE
READER OF HOW THEY ARE GOING TO GET THERE (roadmap/blueprint plan)
A visit to the Kingdom of Narnia is an overall better value than the Island of
Neverland, particularly in the summer months, based on the criteria of round-trip
travel fare, room and boarding expenses, and excursion fees.
ENG220CL—Short Writing Assignment 3 Guidelines
 It is required that your thesis statement perform each of these functions, i.e., telling
your readers where they are going to go (to Paris!), and telling them how they are going
to get there (by automobile, aircraft, and passenger train). Good thesis statements have
a TOPIC+AN AGRUABLE OPINION+A BLUEPRINT PLAN OF REASONS. Theses that don’t
perform all of these functions will be considered incorrect.
 It is not enough to merely identify the criteria for each topic and the similarities and
differences of those criteria in each topic. You must also supply ample hard evidence to
support any/every claim. For example, if you claim that the heroines in both L. Frank
Baum’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) and J. M. Barrie’s play Peter and
Wendy (1904) are, in fact, motherly in nature (even though they are both children),
your evidence to support that claim would be in the form of quoted—and properly cited
with proper lead-in devices—passages from the primary texts, with suitable, follow-up
explanations of why they were included in the analysis.
The example in the box below has all of the required specifications:
(a.) a proper lead-in phrase (highlighted in yellow),
(b.) a quoted passage that follows the lead-in device (highlighted in green),
(c.) a proper parenthetical citation (highlighted in blue), and
(d.) a follow-up, explanatory sentence, a.k.a., lead-out device (highlighted in pink).
A second example of how Dorothy, the archetypal heroine of L. Frank
Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900), puts on the metaphorical mask of the
mother-figure is when she exclaimed to the guardian character, Cowardly Lion,
“Don’t you dare bite Toto! You ought to be ashamed of yourself, a big beast like you,
to bite a poor little dog!” (Baum 34). This clearly demonstrates how the once poor,
little girl from Kansas who had formerly depended on others to fight her battles, had
suddenly found it within her to step up to the role of protector—a motherly
function—of her adoptive child, Toto the dog. Her disciplinary actions help
transform the Lion from a threshold guardian into an ally who behaves according to
norms.

  • Analyze and Reflect on the image collage you shared with classmates. Explain how the images illustrate ways in which anthropology can be applied to address problems in the modern world.

Assignment 2 (6 pages 3 references, APA formatted)

Please the attached and incorporate the concepts in to the assignment.

Please watch the following link and cover the points detailed on how to write an ethnography.

https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2014/09/…

The goal of this exercise is to observe a ‘cultural scene’ as an anthropologist would (i.e. based on everything you have learned in the course to-date). The student will analyze their observations in terms of themes from the subfield of cultural anthropology such as how it helps frame our societies (family, lifestyle, lineage, language and communication) and, in some ways, its evolution.

The development and maintenance of culture is what sets humans apart from other species. Culture varies by time and location.

For this assignment, students will be observing a particular setting for 25 minutes, writing up your observations, and then analyzing them.

Directions for 6 page Assignment:

  • Choose a time and location for where/when you are going to conduct your observations of an ethnographic scene (mall, public transportation, coffee shop, etc.).
  • Go to the specified location and proceed with your observations. Find a place to sit quietly and to simply watch what is going on. Do not talk to or interview people during this time.
  • When your 25 minutes are finished, leave the scene. In a quiet place, fill out your notes. At this time, you should start to think about concepts that you’ve learned in class that fit with your observations. This step is critical.
  • Write a detailed 6 page reaction paper about your observations

Your paper should cover each of the following points

  1. Include details about the scene itself (time of day, lighting, furniture, plants, sounds, temperature, smell, vibe/energy, etc), details about the people around you (their characteristics, their behavior).
  • Define and discuss culture you observe
  • Include a ‘thick description’ of the location with clear detail of your observations
  • Analyze your observations, identifying four anthropological concepts that fit your observations. For example Subsistence strategy, Kinship, Gender roles, Marriage, Artifacts Subsistence strategy, Generalized reciprocity, Religion (mosque nearby with call to prayer), Kinship and extended family, ethnocentrism, ethnicity, reciprocity, kinship, language or communication-
  • Define the concept and analyze how it fits your observations.
  • Include your field notes at the end and detail and conclude with a discussion of and reflection on your experience of the situation. For example, you might write how you felt when you started to detect a pattern in characteristics and/or behavior.

(One common misstep is to apply the four subfields of anthropology or to apply the four parts of the definition of culture).

What is an anthropological concept? Anthropological concepts are anthropological terms and ideas. Examples of some that we’ve studied include: ethnocentrism, ethnicity, reciprocity, kinship, language and communication.

Assignment 2 (6 pages 3 references, APA formatted)

Purpose:

The primary goal of this exercise is for the student to further examine evolution from the perspective of two subfields in anthropology. The all-encompassing nature of evolution will be illustrated, and students will have the opportunity to explore the holistic nature of anthropology.

Description:

Anthropologists study many different aspects of humanity in order to fully understand the diversity of the human species. One of these aspects concerns our development as a species, both physically and culturally. For the assignment, the student will first discuss and investigate evolution as viewed by physical anthropology, and then the student will investigate and discuss evolution from one other subfield – cultural, linguistic, or archaeological.

Directions:

1) Define evolution to include primate to human and why species have to evolve to live in changing environments.

2) Define physical anthropology. Discuss some of the general ways physical anthropologists investigate evolution.

3) Review the Quantifying Characters: Polygenist Anthropologists and the Hardening of Heredity (attached). Describe the research project and its significance in our understanding of evolution.

4) Review Dispatches from the AIA (attached). Discuss some of the general ways an anthropologist in this second subfield investigates evolution. Detail the evolution factors and significance.

*Remember, evolution can apply to both physical and societal changes, so things like language and customs can evolve just as much as bodies and brains can.

6) Review The evolution of lethal intergroup violence (attached). Describe the research project and its significance in our understanding of evolution. For example, an archaeologist may look at how tools have changed through time, and what has caused that change (conduct your own original research, do not use this example).

8) Discuss how the study of evolution between physical anthropology and your chosen subfield compares and contrasts.

9) Conclude by discussing and reflecting on one new piece of information you learned about evolution.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

3-5 page essay

Find a poem/song which deals with a subject that you, too, have a strong opinion about and write an essay in which you compare/contrast the viewpoint about that subject presented in the poem/song with what you believe.

Additionally, when you are giving your view of the opinion expressed in the poem/song, make sure that you are providing examples from the poem/song that support what you think that the piece is saying. I am not saying that you should paraphrase the song (don’t do only that!) but just make sure that you are answering the question “What is poem about and what does it say about that subject?” as well as “How does this viewpoint compare with what I think about this subject?”

( the song that im using is kendrick lamar- how much a dollar costs censor the profanity and try to tie in the fact that this is how the reaction that most people with wealth would react in this situation and how when we as humans feel like we are moving up in the world we tend to forget about and neglect those in need even though we dont know that persons story)

A note about using songs for this essay: Songs are valid choices when talking about poetry because most well written songs have strong poetic elements….They are pretty much poems set to music.

HOWEVER!..
A. Make sure that you choose a song that, after you have taken away the music associated with it, is still worthy of your attention. There are songs whose lyrics can stand alone as fine poetry and then there are those which, once the music is gone, don’t really hold up to analysis. (Try writing an essay on the Beatles’ “She loves you (yeah, yeah, yeah)” and see how far you get, for example. Great song. Lousy poetry. LOL)

B. Don’t organize the structure of your essay around the structure of the song ( or poem, for that matter). Remember that whether you are talking about your experience or your opinion, your focus in these essays is YOUR response and how it compares to the poem/song

C. Quote the lines of a song the same way that you quote the lines of a poem: put it in quotes and if you are quoting more than one line, separate the lines of the poem with a “/”. For example, “In her poem ‘To a Daughter Leaving Home’, Linda Pastan starts out the poem by saying, ‘When I taught you/ at eight to ride/ a bicycle’. ” See? (The poem itself is in the book on page 916).
