Question Answered step-by-step Respond on the issues identified, how do their responses compare toyour point of view. Are there any similarities or differences that surprised you?Medication administration errors are dangerous to patient safety and it is an issue that can arise from nurse burnout. A study from the University of Alabama Birmingham found statistical significance between the level of nurse burnout and self-reported medication administration errors. (Montgomery et al., 2021) This evidence shows that work-related stress in nursing can become overwhelming that it can turn into burnout which leads to medication errors. The threat to the patient with a medication error is it can severely harm or even kill the patient, and that is bad for business. It can also cost an organization approximately $81,000 in nurse turnover. (Roney and Acri, 2018) It’s well known that in the United States healthcare is a business, and like any business they need to make more money than they spend to stay open. One of the ways healthcare businesses were making money in the past was by billing insurance companies and Medicare for the number of patients on a provider’s panel, but that seems to be changing. According to Rose Kearny-Nunnery, “The federal government and some private insurances have begun to pay providers for performance or outcomes.” (2020, p. 317) This is important because the focus will now shift from a numbers game to how the patient responds to the treatment provided. Luckily for me the focus is already on cost-effective and quality of outcomes the Department of Veterans Affairs. However, more resources need to be devoted to preventing nurse burnout to allow for better patient outcomes. Nurses are the key to good patient outcomes, but causing burnout in nurses is causing a lot of financial and other problems.
