Ethics     in Research

84 responses (80 unread)

Briefly describe the population from which data will be collected from during future implementation of the action research study. View the Belmont Report, Ethical Principles and Guidelines for the Protection of Human Subjects of Research. Then watch the following videos*:

*WARNING: The following videos contain strong or potentially offensive language. Obedience to Authority_Stanley Milgram      Experiment  Feature Film – The Stanford Prison      Experiment (Documentary)  Apology to survivors of the Tuskegee      syphilis experiment

According to Mills (2014), “all research studies involve ethical considerations. Therefore, all researchers must be aware of and attend to the ethical considerations related to their studies” (p. 27). Therefore, identify the potential ethical concerns associated with the topic you selected in Week One in collecting the type of data you plan to collect from this particular population. How will you address those ethical concerns when designing your action research project around this topic? Be sure to keep in mind the big three ethical principles: respect for persons, beneficence, and justice, as well as informed consent, assessment of risk, and selection of subjects as discussed in the Belmont Report and to refer to them in your response. Having no ethical considerations is not an option.

Guided Response: Take on the role of fellow teacher, building or district/regional administrator, parent, IRB, or other role.  Respond to at least two of your classmates, and imagine you are listening to your co-worker explain via their initial post the ethical issues they need to be aware of and/or address when framing their action research study. What insight can you provide based on what you learned from your study of ethical rules and procedures in research involving human subjects? What did they miss? How might they handle a potentially sticky ethical concern? *It is expected you follow up by the last day of the week to provide a secondary response to any comments or questions your instructor may have provided. This is part of the grading criteria as a demonstration of critical thinking.

Carefully review the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate this Discussion Thread.

Food Justice/Food Deserts

The purpose of this discussion is to offer you the opportunity to debate the issue of food justice and food deserts. Food deserts are significant issues in poorer neighborhoods in the United States. In many of these neighborhoods, the only access to food is through local convenience stores or fast food restaurants. This severely limits the options for the poor to have access to fresh, wholesome food and has been evidenced as a key reason for the obesity epidemic in the United States. This issue is encompassed in the overarching topic of food justice, which also highlights public access to genetically modified or organic foods and the issues of equal access to positive food options in light of public health and social inequality. Prepare and post a response to the following prompt:

Read the Hilmers article, Neighborhood Disparities in Access to Healthy Foods and Their Effects on Environmental Justice . Assume that your town is a food desert and you would like to do something about it. Prepare an argument to present to your local town council that outlines an idea to offer healthy food options to your town. Use at least one ethical theory or perspective to support the moral or ethical reasoning for why this program should be implemented.

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Support your claims with examples from the required resources and/or other scholarly sources, and properly cite any references in APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center . Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by Day 7.

Create a Career Goal

Week 2 – Discussion 1

Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses. Reference the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.

Create   a Career Goal

Using the table below as a guideline for evaluating your goal, create your own career goal. Post your final career goal into the discussion forum. Review two peers’ career goals and determine the following: Is the goal specific? Are relevant skills included? Is a specific job title or industry listed? Are non-negotiable items detailed?

Developing a career goal is a great way to take charge of planning your career and a useful tool to manage your career effectively. Many individuals may not know how to develop a career goal; follow the steps below to help you determine where to start. There are a few steps that can be helpful in determining your career goal, which include: conducting a self-assessment, exploring industries and careers, and determining factors that are non-negotiable (e.g., geographic location, salary requirements, and health care benefits). The final step of goal setting is writing the first draft of your goal.

Step 1: Self-Assessment What do you do well? What energizes you? If you knew you could not fail, what would you do? What high school subjects did you do well in? What issues do family and friends come to you for help? What do you receive praise for at work or home? What are some of your greatest accomplishments? What is something you do where you lose track of time      when you are doing it?

If you would like to take an online self-assessment to learn more about yourself, you may take TypeFocus. Visit the Self- Discovery Resources page of My Career to learn how you can register to take the assessment.

Step 2: Career Exploration
Explore job industries by conducting research on the type of careers that use your interests and skillset. O*Net OnLine, the Occupational Outlook Handbook, and Bureau of Labor Statistics are great web resources for career exploration, job analysis, and education requirements.

Ask a professional in your career field of interest for an informational interview. Informational interviews allow you to gather information from a direct contact about his or her role. There are various ways to pursue an informational interview. For example, company websites, social networking sites, newspaper ads, and professional associations are avenues a job seeker can take.

Also, while deciding on a goal, consider your current lifestyle and where you would like to be in the future. Some helpful questions to consider are listed below.  Does the career you want pay a salary that meets your      needs? Will it offer you opportunities to advance?   Are you comfortable sitting at a desk all day, or do      you prefer to travel?  Is the career you are considering likely to exist when      you are ready for a job?

Step 3: Determining your non-negotiable items
Although we may not speak them aloud, we each have things we are not willing to compromise on. During this step, write out your “must haves” for your future career.

To help get you started, think about the minimum salary you need to have, where you want to live, and desired work hours.

Example Career Goal
I would like to become a project manager within a large organization (5000+ employees) utilizing my organizational skills, education in organization development, my ability to strategically plan, and my detail-oriented nature. Since I have a family, I must have a salary of $50,000 or more, work within 25 miles of Houston, Texas, and work a 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. traditional work schedule.

What is your goal?

Guided Response: After reading your fellow classmates’ posts, provide a substantive response to at least two of your peers by Day 7. Your three required posts must be on three different days of the week. Include a thorough and constructive analysis of the goal :  Is the goal specific? Are relevant skills included?
