Defense Spending and the Military-Industrial Complex
Levin-Waldman (2012, pp. 186-89) analyzes how “iron triangles” link Congress, the bureaucracy, and interest groups in self-serving relationships that influence policy in ways that are contrary to the public interest. In 1961, at the end of President Eisenhower’s second term, he gave a farewell address to the nation in which he warned of the dangers of a “military-industrial complex.” Many commentators today see the military-industrial complex as an example of an iron triangle that bloats the defense budget and distorts national priorities. Not everyone would accept this analysis, however, especially defense “hawks” in Congress, the military bureaucracies, and defense industries.

In your initial post of at least 200-250 words, briefly explain the iron triangle model of policy-making involving Congress, the bureaucracy, and interest groups. Analyze information about relationships among Congress, the military bureaucracies, and defense industries. Draw your own conclusion, and support it with facts and with persuasive reasoning, about the impact of these relationships on defense spending. Evaluate the accuracy of the iron triangle model as a basis for understanding the process of making defense spending policy.

My research question, which would help learn about the performance of students, would be, “Does studying in groups help prepare for a test more than studying by yourself?” To start this experiment, I would take a group of 150 college students taking the same class. Group A would consist of 75 students who are studying by themselves and group B would consist of 75 students studying in groups of 3. These 2 groups will study for the same test and will have their scores recorded. In order to control the third variable, the students in both groups would need to have roughly the same GPA so any group does not have any advantage. Also, each of the groups would have to study the same amount. Both groups A and B would study 2 hours a day for 3 days to prepare. Both groups would be using the same study guide, chapter notes, and textbook in order to study for the test. After taking the test, I would compare the test scores of both groups to evaluate the relationship of studying in groups and test scores. The independent variable is studying in groups and the dependent variable is the test scores. The casual relationship would be if studying in groups can improve test scores.

When looking at the relationship between social justice and juvenile justice, there are two over arching concepts when addressing juvenile delinquency – treatment and punishment. These two concepts have driven a cycle of changes in the juvenile justice system over the years. Your task is to support your premise that your state or city should either implement a philosophy of treatment or punishment for juvenile offenders for a specific crime or criminal justice issue identified in your paper. Explain the differences between the treatment and punishment concepts. Build the case for which one you believe has the stronger position based on your research and the crime or criminal justice issue you selected to study. Review the juvenile crime statistics between three cities or states in three different parts of the country (e.g., Boston, Chicago, and Seattle) for a crime or criminal justice issue. Incorporate a graphic display to present your findings. Be sure to include at least three demographic items, such as gender, ethnicity, race, education, or socio-economic status, in your analysis. Ensure you standardize your data (i.e., 1:1000; 1:10,000; or 1: 100,000) and incorporate the scale in a key for each chart.
