ANT 101 Discussion 2

Ashford 2: – Week 1 – Discussion 2

Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses. Reference the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.

Cultural   Relativism

Cultural relativism asserts that every culture has its own set of customs and beliefs, and that culture must be understood by the standards and values of the people within that culture. Anthropologists think that things that might seem cruel or irrational in our own culture must be seen through the lens of cultural relativity, and that all cultures have practices or beliefs that can be seen by others as repugnant or incomprehensible.

After reading the U.N. Declaration of Human Rights, explain whether you think that cultural relativism can coexist with the idea of universal human rights. Is it possible for anthropologists to promote human rights without imposing, for example, their own Western values and ideas of human rights?

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Support your claims with examples from the required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references. By Day 7, respond to at least two of your peers who have expressed an opinion that differs from yours. Does their discussion of this change your opinion on this subject? Why or why not?

The Ashford Writing Center (AWC) has two kinds of tutoring available to you.

Live Chat – If you have writing-related questions about a      topic before you draft a discussion post or submit a written assignment,      you will now be able to chat live with a tutor for a short (up to 20      minute) conversation. Live Chat will be available Monday through Friday      from 10:00-11:00 am and 4:00-5:00 pm (PST). AWC Live Chat Email Paper Review – If you have a draft, partial draft, or even if      you’re having trouble getting started, you can complete a submission form      and email your paper to the AWC for review.

Writing Tutors will do their best to return your paper       with their comments within 48 hours, not including Saturdays and Sundays.       Please plan accordingly if you would like to receive feedback before an       assignment due date. AWC Email Paper Review

Philosophy themes research paper – The Lives of Others movie

Philosophy themes research paper – The Lives of Others movie

Your paper must identify and discuss critically one philosophical theme (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. in an essay, chapter, or film.

The structure of an ideal paper is simple: (a) an introduction in which you clearly identify the philosophical theme you plan to discuss and, if possible, say what you’re going to say about it; (b) the body of the paper in which you trace key elements of the theme in the essay (quotations helpful—but only a few key ones); and (c) a conclusion in which you sum up the book’s overall treatment of the theme. You must refer to at least five items, other than encyclopedia articles, including at least two academic books or papers.

Your paper must identify and discuss critically one philosophical theme in an essay, chapter, or film.

Some of you have been asking for guidance on this. Focus on something central to this course:

Normativity (ought, values, virtues, obligations)

Sources of normative authority (institutions? individuals? God?)

Truth (especially moral truth)

Objectivity of norms (Are they objective? Subjective? Relative? Noncognitive?)

You may write about any writer from the second half of the course:

Anna Akhmatova Mikhailo Dray-Khmara Leszek Kolakowski Jorge Luis Borges

Albert Camus C. S. Lewis Friedrich Hayek Lawrence Ferlinghetti

W. V. O. Quine Iris Murdoch * Jean-François Lyotard

Joan Didion John Rawls Robert Nozick Alexandr Solzhenitsyn

Vaclav Havel

You may also write about The Lives of Others.

· Choose a work other than Under the Net for Murdoch.

You may write about what we’ve read or will read for class (except in the case of Murdoch), or you may choose another work by that author. I strongly suggest writing about only one work for each author, however. Don’t try to write about every play Camus wrote, for example. Don’t try to write about several Borges stories.

You may also write about two figures if you think that helps you identify, develop, or contrast two approaches to a theme. But one must be from this list. The other could be from the first half of the course. It could also be a political figure from either half (e.g., Wilson, Coolidge, Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy, Reagan).

5.You must refer to at least five items, other than encyclopedia articles, including at least two academic books or papers.

How do you find them? I recommend Google Scholar:

http://scholar.google.com

Look at titles and descriptions to judge relevance to your project; look at citations to judge the importance of the publication. But it’s only a rough guide.

In response to some questions I’ve been receiving:

1. If you write on The Lives of Others, you may have a few extra days;

2. There are 20th-century writers we have not covered who deal with themes of the kind mentioned in my last announcement and could easily be related to writers ands topics in this course. If you want to write about such an author, that’s fine with me. Some examples: Kurt Vonnegut; Aldous Huxley; Joseph Heller; Arthur Koestler; George Orwell; John Dos Passos; Evelyn Waugh; Graham Greene; Walker Percy; Lawrence Durrell; Elizabeth Bowen; Samuel Beckett; J.R.R. Tolkien; Ray Bradbury; Antoine de Saint-Exupéry; Pablo Neruda; Eugène Ionesco; Flann O’Brien; Kingsley Amis; Mario Vargas Llosa; John le Carré; Tom Wolfe; Milan Kundera; Haruki Murakami; Franz Kafka.

3. You don’t have to discuss the sources to which you refer in any detail. This is not a book or article report. Use them to support or advance your own thinking.

3 page essay on response to this anti islam article

A Houston Muslim advocacy group has demanded the disciplining of a Richmond high school teacher for allegedly distributing material to students that the group called “virulently anti-Muslim.”

Mustafaa Carroll, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Wednesday said the material was distributed in a senior economics class at Richmond’s Foster High School. The Lamar Consolidated School District could not be immediately reached Wednesday morning concerning the incident.

Carroll said the eight-page handout contains material that apparently originated on an anti-Muslim Web site. “That stuff is all over the Internet,” he said (see full document).

The handout contains a variety of purported facts about Muslims and their beliefs. It asserts that Jesus and the Apostle Paul warned that “after they were gone many false prophets would come. Muhammad is simply one of them.”

Islam, the handout says, is more of an “ideology” than a religion. “It is also a ideology of war,” it says.

The handout also contends that Muslims believe all governments except Islamic ones should be overthrown, and asserts that the religion’s noble rule is “You will become a Muslim yourself or you will die.”

Carroll said school officials seemed responsive to his organization’s complaint. “We thank school officials for taking this issue seriously and await appropriate disciplinary action for the teacher. Only a strong response to this attempt at student indoctrination will send a message that our schools must never be incubators of hate.”

Carroll said he is not aware of any anti-Muslim incidents or an undercurrent of tension at the high school.

Ashford 3: – Week 2 – Discussion

Discussion

By Day 1 of the week, your   instructor will post a discussion question. Respond to your instructor’s   question and to your classmates’ responses. The goal of this discussion forum   is to have a single conversation about the topic, not a series of 30 separate   conversations. This means that every post should be in response to another   post. Only start a new thread if you want to address a whole different theme   within the topic, and only post after first carefully reading what others   have written. Do not repeat what your classmates have already said, and do   not ignore them if they ask you questions. Try to keep the conversation   moving forward.

Attend discussion on at least four   separate days, and post a total of 800 words. There is no required word count   for individual posts as long as all your posts together total 800 words. Nor   is there a minimum number of posts, but you must post on at least four   separate days by Day 7.

Carefully review the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate this   Discussion Thread.

Discussion for       Week 2

Reading: Heart of Darkness (Complete       novel. p. 51-182 in the Google Books edition) = 131 pages
In the poem “The White Man’s Burden”, Rudyard Kipling portrays the idea       that Europe and America had an obligation to shine the “light” of       civilization into the “darkness” of “savage” places like Africa. Most       scholars see Joseph Conrad’s novel Heart       of Darkness as a critique of this imperialist       project. Discuss Conrad’s attitude toward British imperialism, paying       particular attention to the way Conrad plays with images of light vs.       darkness and civilization vs. savagery. What exactly does Conrad think is       the problem with imperialism? What is the “horror” that the character       Kurtz refers to with his dying breath? Be sure to cite specific passages       from the text that support your interpretation. Once you have a clear       understanding of the text, you can move on to evaluation and application.       For example, you may wish to discuss ways that Conrad’s novel expresses       racist attitudes that might undercut his attempted critique of       imperialism. In other words, you may wish to discuss how Conrad is an       example of Edward Said’s concept of “orientalism.” Or you may wish to       discuss other examples of orientalism you see in today’s culture.

Remember that       your discussions have to be a total of 800 words over 4 different days.       The initial post should be at a minimum 350-400 words and the response       can make up the differences to total 800 words. Please respond to my       initial post/thread and respond to 3 peers with substantive responses (at       least 150-200 words each), rather than initiating new threads.
