Members of dominant ethnic and racial groups may assume that other groups’ struggles are not their own or assume that those of a given race speak with one voice and react in the same way to their oppression. In reality, people can cope with racial inequalities in a variety of ways, creating complex relationships both between the dominant and oppressed group and among members of the dominant and oppressed groups.

As a social worker, you must understand the many ways in which racial privilege can impact your clients. You must also understand the ways in which racial privilege has impacted your life and the ways you react to the realities of racism. You will likely need to help clients address racial divides and combat racial inequality to empower them.

In this case, the school district would still responsible for meeting the educational needs of the students even if the student required an educational placement outside of their home school district. Scenario: Michael has been referred for special education services after teachers and his parents had tried several problem-solving efforts within his current school and classroom to help meet his education needs. Results from Michael’s full case study evaluation suggest that he possesses behaviors consist with an emotional disability and requires special education services for more than 50% of his school day in order to help meet his educational needs. Michael’s Individual Education Plan (IEP) team decides that he requires a therapeutic day placement in order to meet his educational needs.  An administrator within Michael’s home school district states that the school district does not offer a therapeutic day placement option for students and Michael must attend a placement outside of the county.  This placement will cost over $5,000 per year, but the school has stated they can only pay $3,000 for an out of district therapeutic day placement.

Based on what you have learned about FAPE, explain why or why not this is an acceptable solution for Michael.

Case 1: Joseph, an 8-year-old first grader recently placed in foster care after an emergency removal from his home.

Situation: Several schools in the area have asked Children’s Services to provide an informational training for school staff about children placed in foster care and the schools about what to look for and how to support kids who are in this transition. You will be presenting in front of educators, school administrators, and school counselors at a school-sponsored training session. This is an opportunity to advocate for inter-agency partnerships.

Case 2: Mark, a 28-year-old inmate at in the transition unit at a correctional facility who is expected to be released in two months.

Situation. You will be presenting in front of a local business group who is interested in learning more about the job transition program. This is an opportunity to advocate for more local businesses to hire individuals from the program to work for them.Instructions

The assignment is to develop and present your course of action for your client in the context of a broader group of stakeholders. In addition to assuming responsibility for recommending a course of action for your client, you are also advocating that the community consider addressing a larger issue.

You received information on your client in the form of case notes, case files, database records, and phone conversations, and you actively analyzed, synthesized, and evaluated the information to better understand the nature of the client and his situation. You created a case conceptualization. You also participated in collaborative conversations in which you sought, listened to, and integrated the opinions of other professionals.
