Ageism

 The purpose of this discussion is to give you the opportunity to apply ethical theories to the complex issue of ageism in the workplace, particularly in the area of employment. In the modern workplace there appear to be the following three key issues that address ageism in employment, some of which have been exacerbated by recent economic issues and an aging population: Older job seekers fight ageism as a barrier to      re-employment. Younger job seekers have trouble obtaining career      entry. Evidence in many countries highlights that older worker      employment and youth employment are not connected in any way.

This last point is generally known in economics as the “Lump of Labor Fallacy,” which challenges the view that if older workers are employed in a tight labor market, then they must be occupying the jobs of the country’s youth. Prepare and post a response to the following prompt:
 

Using at least one ethical perspective or theory from the text and one item of scholarly evidence, present an argument to a group of younger workers (regarding older worker and youth employment) in which you refute the notion that older workers take employment from the young.
 

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Support your claims with examples from the required material(s) and/or other scholarly sources, and properly cite any references in APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. Explain why a college-educated person might have        different duties to society than someone not as educated. Support your claims with examples from required        material(s) and/or other scholarly sources, and properly cite any        references. Respond to Peers: Review your classmates’ posts, and respond to at least   two of your peers by Day 7. In each response, provide comments that   prompt further critical thinking and insight on your classmate’s   perspective on ethical values as they relate to their personal, academic and   professional lives. Writing   About Literature

  

Prepare: Prior to writing your initial post, read Chapters 1   through 3 of Journey into Literature.

 

Reflect: As we explored in the “Why Read Literature?” discussion,   literature can provide us with a multitude of perspectives, ideas, and   experiences. Additionally, there is a long tradition of critical reading and   writing about literature (i.e., analyzing literature to seek a deeper   understanding about various interests and concerns). Chapter 2 focuses on   these ideas. Consider why people write and how that writing may benefit us.

 

Write: Your initial post should be at least 200 words in length.   The minimum word count does not include references. In your post, answer the   following questions:  Why might a writer feel        compelled to write about literature? How does it benefit us personally        and/or professionally? What kind of writing and        thinking skills do you hope that you will develop in this course based        on the description of writing about literature in Sections 1.1, 2.1, and        2.3 of the text? Incorporate readings found in        Chapters 1 through 3 to help illustrate the points you make.

 

Respond to Peers: Respond to at least two of your classmate’s initial posts.   Each response should be at least 75 words in length and should address two or   more of the following points:  Do you agree with your        classmates’ perspectives? Step 4: Create a PowerPoint presentation that includes 10-12 slides  with voice recording that presents your recommended improvements.  Discuss the good and bad factors of each Web site. Discuss how a sample  task is supported on each of the Web sites. Describe how the Web site  can be redesigned or revised to achieve better results.
