What is your opinion of the oratorical leaders and the magic of stereotypes?

No one gets through life alone. To some extent, we are all products of our environments. We learn from our families, schools, and cultures. Every person has to face severe challenges and conquer obstacles. How we face our challenges depends on how we are shaped by others and our strength of character.

Certain individuals in our society have played powerful roles in the evolution of prevailing norms. While we learn our culture from agents of socialization, great leaders with lofty visions lead people and nations in the direction of emancipation, economic prosperity, and political freedom. Each of the following speeches tells the story of a struggle and its leader. Each speech echoes the aspirations of thousands of people as well as their desire to change their social situations.

The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate the power of stereotypes as a shorthand communication tool. With great economy of words, each speaker uses stereotypes to frame the audience into an in-group of which he or she is the leader and the out-group on the opposing side.

Part 1: Read transcripts of famous speeches:

Part 2: Research other famous speeches

Explore various resources to research other famous speeches related to stereotyping and prejudice. Some suggestions are below. You may be able to find these speeches in video, audio, or text format. Try using a variety of search methods including visiting your local library, using Netflix or your local video store, or searching on YouTube. (You might also try locating the videos for the two famous speeches listed in Part 1 of this assignment.)

  • Malcolm X: By Any Means Necessary
  • Mahatma Gandhi: Nonviolence speech from the film Gandhi
  • Gandhi’s definition on Satyagraha

Part 3: Write a Paper

For this assignment, select one of the above speakers/speech and prepare a 1200- to 1500-word paper that answers the following questions:

  • Why did you select this particular speaker? Explain in around 300 words.
  • Which is the in-group, and what are the unifying values or the ascribed status that provides its solidarity? Explain in around 300 words.
  • What stereotype—prejudice, subordination, or discrimination—is the in-group challenging? Provide specific examples and explain in around 300 words.
  • In your view, did members of the in-group conspire to subordinate the
out-group, or was the in-group merely operating within the social structure of its time? Explain in around 300 words.
  • How have your attitudes toward prejudice, subordination, or discrimination been influenced by the agents of socialization, such as family, peer groups, schools, and the media? Explain in around 300 words.

Provide a minimum of 3 references and apply the correct APA standards in the formatting of text, citations, and references.

State of Florida v. Casey Marie Anthony

State of Florida v. Casey Marie Anthony

In October 2008, Casey Anthony was arrested and charged with the disappearance and murder of her two year old daughter, Caylee. She was originally charged with giving false statements, child neglect, and obstruction of a criminal investigation – this was later expanded to include first degree murder, aggravated child abuse, aggravated manslaughter of a child, and four counts of providing false information to police. In December 2008, Caylee’s skeletal remains were discovered.

After a long contentious trial, on July 5 2011, the jury found Anthony not guilty of first-degree murder, aggravated manslaughter, and aggravated child abuse, and guilty on four misdemeanor counts of providing false information to a law enforcement officer. Jurors cited lack of evidence directly linking Anthony to the murder.

On July 7, 2011 Anthony was sentenced to one year in jail and $1,000 in fines for each of the four counts of providing false information to a law enforcement officer, with the sentences to be served consecutively. Anthony received three years credit for time served plus additional credit for good behavior, resulting in her release date being set for July 13, 2011.

Questions: Emotions aside, do you believe the prosecution overcharged the case? Why or why not? Was there enough evidence to convict Anthony as she was charged? Why or why not? What are you thoughts on the evidence presented by the defense?

Please conduct research to support your stances and cite your sources in Bluebook or APA format at the end of your posting.

Gender Roles Essay RGECT4

Select two popular magazine websites: (one targeted at men, one targeted at women) and review the portrayal of gender roles and sexuality in the advertisements. In a 3-4-page paper, discuss your observations about the types of images you see in these magazines. Are there differences in the portrayals of gender in the magazine targeted at men and the other targeted at women? What about for sexuality? Are these magazines targeted at straight men? Straight women? How does that inform our understanding of gender being socially constructed? Is the assumption that a mainstream women’s magazine also be targeted towards straight women? Consider how women’s and men’s magazines cover sex as a topic. Be explicit in your analysis and descriptions of the ads.

If you are not aware of any mainstream men’s and women’s magazines, you should do an Internet search for “popular men’s magazines” and “popular women’s magazines.” It is important that you do not search for “gay men’s” or “lesbian” or “trans” magazines because we are looking at what is considered mainstream.

Instructions:

  • Write a 3-4-page paper or about 1500 words, not including the title and reference pages, which are required.
  • Your paper must be properly cited and formatted according to APA guidelines.
  • Include a formal Reference page. This is an individual paper, however, you should reflect on our Discussion Forums and incorporate ideas from there as appropriate.
  • You must support your analysis with at least three scholarly references and can include resources from this course. Sources such as Wikipedia, USA Today, Fox News, or MSNBC news will not be accepted.

You are a citizen at the gladiatorial games in Rome. EASY PAPER

The year is 86 CE, and the emperor Domitian has set aside a day for the gladiatorial

games in the Colosseum in Rome. You are a Roman citizen fortunate enough to have a seat to

the spectacle.

Set the scene and describe the day’s events. In particular, give a play-by-play account of

two separate contests you witness: the first one (in the morning) between a

bestiarius and a wild animal(s) of your choosing, and the second one (in the afternoon) between two gladiators. You

may also describe more bouts than just these two. For inspiration you might think of the combat

scenes in the docudrama “A Gladiator’s Story” we watch in class on Monday, Nov. 12.

Be graphic in your description—remember that Roman audiences were not squeamish

when it came to blood and gore. In your write-up make sure to address the following questions:

?

Describe the physical characteristics of Colosseum. What is the atmosphere like there, with a

packed crowd? (in modern terms, imagine the ambience of a sports stadium)

?

Give some background information on each of the gladiators: first names, age,

social status (slaves, freedmen, criminals, etc.), combatant status (veterans or newcomers),

and how they came to fight for their lives in the arena

?

What types of gladiators are they and how can you tell? (i.e. describe their armor, weaponry,

and general appearance)

?

Which contestants is the crowd cheering for and why?

?

Who wins the contests and how? Does anyone die or is the loser spared? Why or why not?

What roles do the crowd and emperor play in determining the fate of the combatants?

As you research the historical facts that

must

guide your description every step of the

way, make use of: 1) the PowerPoint “Lecture 11-5 Gladiators” for Week 11; 2) what you

learned from watching “A Gladiator’s Story”; 3) assigned readings from Futrell and Knapp

(ordered for class).

Also explore the internet for even more visuals of Roman gladiators and especially

modern reconstructions of the ancient Colosseum, which will help you better visualize it as it

existed in the 1st century CE. NOTE: include a bibliography of all books, websites, etc. you

consulted in addition to the resources mentioned above in #1-3. You do not need to list the items

in #1-3.
