The final assignment in this course is a 7 to 9-page paper following the guidelines below, to be double-spaced and using 12-point font (Arial or Times New Roman). Use the APA Template attached above. Be sure to cite your sources, which at a minimum should be the textbook. Other sources that we used throughout the course should be included and cited as relevant to the topics you choose. There is no need to provide additional sources beyond these. Don’t forget to include your sources in the References list at the end of your paper.

Part 1 of 2: We have studied a broad range of leadership topics over the past seven weeks. For the final Leadership Paper, please select five of the topics we have covered that resonate with you and your professional and personal experiences. For each of the five topics you select:

  1. Identify what you learned and apply what you understand about the topic to either yourself or an individual/leader whom you admire
  2. Describe one or more specific examples or situations involving you or the admired individual that demonstrate or relate to the selected topic

Retailers often mark down products in order to attract customers. We all like a good sale at our favorite store. This week we will discuss successive discounts.

Here is an example of a successive discount. I went to my favorite store and I found a purse on sale for 30% off. Luckily that day, the store also offered an additional 25% off the already discounted price. The original price of the purse was $120. How much did I pay for the purse if the sales tax rate is 8.25%?

Here is how I can find the final price:

Find the complements of the discounts:

  • The complement of 30% is (100% – 30%) = 70% = 0.70.
  • The complement of 25% is (100% – 25%) = 75% = 0.75.

Multiply the original price by the complements of the discounts:

  • ($120)(0.70)(.75) = $63 This is the sale price.

Now find the total price including tax. To do this multiply the sale price by (1 + the sales tax)

  • ($63)(1 + .0825) = $68.20 This is the total price I paid.

Find an example of a successive discount, either form your favorite store, in a weekly circular, or on the internet. Show all your calculations for finding the sale price (using the example above as a guideline) including the sales tax using the sales tax rate in your community. Discuss how most people miscalculate successive discounts in comparison to the calculation you posted and explain the reasons for the miscalculation most people do.

Clarification points:
Focus of the paper is on maximizing one part of Strategic Plan Implementation – communicating the plan to the stakeholders of the organization (particularly the employees).

The 7 functions of communication are based on the Shannon-Weaver model of communication commonly used in all types of healthcare organizations:

  Sender – who
  Message (verbal, non-verbal, or combination of both) – what
  Receiver – who
  Perception – how the message is perceived/received
  Decoding – what context the message is decoded (understood)
  Feedback – tell me what you heard me say?
  Environment – organizational context (e.g., distractions, level of communication support, etc.).

Any one of the above elements has the potential to limit the effectiveness and efficiency of communication. Moreover, communication barriers are typically classified in two categories:

  Environmental – competition for time and attention; noise; medium (e.g., verbal face-to-face, auditory phone, email written, text, etc.); legal requirements/limits (HIPAA); etc.
  Personal – bias, education level, primary learning style, beliefs/values, frame of reference/experience, etc.

Most importantly, communication always has room for improvement and should be carefully and consistently monitored for two components:

  What message is intended?
  What message is received?

When there is disparity between the two monitoring components, improvement plans are needed.

The ability of a healthcare manager to effectively communicate both expectations and recognition of staff accomplishments forms the foundation for keeping staff motivated. Increasing the frequency of feedback loops means increasing communications to staff indicating they are appreciated and valued for their contributions to the organization. This is important for them to know.

In an analytical paper, prepare a written response to the following:

1. Describe five strategies for improving communications that have been proven to be effective in healthcare organizations. Critique these strategies to justify why they are effective. Library and Internet resources will be helpful here.

2. Discuss how verbal and non-verbal forms of communication each play an important role in how a manager interacts with leadership (peer colleagues and senior level) and with employees. What must a manager keep in mind when communicating with each group? Provide examples to support your findings.

Support your paper with at least three scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including older articles, may be included.

Length: 5-7 pages, not including title and reference pages

  • Another buy-or-lease alternative. You could buy the home for $300,000, putting 20% down and renting it out at $1400 a month. Which would make more sense? Renting or leasing the home? Explain your rationale.
  • Lease your home for the next three years or sell it with the intent to return to the same geographic area after you complete a three-year expatriate assignment in the country of your choice.
  • Given the facts above, should you lease the house or sell it? The current market value is approximately $320,000. Explain your rationale, and show your work.

For the two options that you selected (and using the figures given above for those options), investigate the realistic assumptions for your location and include the information you found in the analysis. Create a paper in about 1,000–1,200 words, including the following:
