Assignment for Film Two

Part 1: View a feature film made between 1970 – 2000 you have not seen before (or will see later in this class) by a great director or featuring a great actor or actress.

Just as you did in the first paper, comment on the specific film you saw. Pay particular attention to the screenplay, camerawork (cinematography) the editing (montage) and the sound (this can include the music). You may also address special effects. Again, as you did in the first paper, talk about what you like, and what you dislike, about what you saw? Whydo you like the things you like, and why do you dislike the things you dislike? Is the film a good film, or is it not?

Part 2: Now that you have commented on the specific film you viewed, see if you can draw some general conclusions about the work of the director and one of the main actors oractresses. Be sure to comment on the overall impression you had of the film, including how you see it as an example of the its genre and time period. Remember, this is not a researchpaper. I am interested in what you have to say, not in what you can learn by reading up on the film or the filmmaker.

Part 3: Go back to the “My Criteria for Quality in Film” page. Based on your viewing of this week’s film, add Five new general conclusions. These statements should be numbered (6)through (10). Be sure to include entire page, including all of your previous criteria statements.

ASSIGNMENT TWO

Watch a movie made between 1970 – 1980 that you have not already seen for this class and answer the following questions.

Describe at least three special effects, camera tricks, stunts or camera angles that caught your attention. Why do you think they were important to the story.

How does sound play a part in the film you watched? Identify at least three places that sound stood out in the film.

How does color play a part in the film you watched for this week? Identify at least three places that color stood out in the film.

Respond to at least two of your classmates.

As we will discuss in greater detail in class, this assignment draws from one of your three earlier essays. Based on your greater command of written language, you will draft a cover letter and revision of one of your earlier essays in this class. It is your choice to which essay to revise and resubmit. You are welcome to rewrite, reanalyze, or make other substantive changes – and your cover letter, in formal format (modeled on a business letter) will describe the changes you elected to make and why. This cover letter is submitted with the revised essay and are combined and weighed as two separate, but related, assignments. Your essay, as with the earlier version submitted, will be in APA format (at least five pages of: cover page, essay text with in-text citations, and a final page of sources) and based on class readings, class discussion, and will require additional independent research

Examine the sample survey journal article in the text by Nippold, Duthie, & Larson (2005) on the reading habits of today’s youth at the end of Chapter 12. Answer the following questions:

1. Was this an example of longitudinal or cross-sectional research?
2. Of the alternative “types” of surveys, was the approach used more of a questionnaire or an interview?
3. In survey research, a sample is drawn from a population and the results of the study generalized to the population. What option below best characterizes the population in this study?

2. List two forms of evidence in this study that suggests the type of grounded theory design that you identified in the last question.
3. Identify the process being explored in this grounded theory study.
4. In paragraph 32 of this study we see a visual diagram of the cycle of developing a leadership identity. Describe the purpose of having a diagram such as this one in a grounded theory study.

Based on the information in this week’s required reading from the text (Carey, 2014), develop a tool to explain learning theory to your students and/or their parents. Make the writing accessible to the age/audience you are addressing.

Final Paper Preparation

To prepare for your Final Paper (due in Week Five), complete the following assignment and submit it to your instructor for feedback. Your paper should include a problem statement, outline, and annotated bibliography.

Problem Statement: Describe the social problem selected for your paper.

Outline: Using the sample below as a guide, provide an outline for your Final Paper. Remember that papers are expected to define a significant problem faced by the justice system, describe the scope and consequences of the problem, and discuss society’s responses to the problem (including public policies and other less formal responses). Your paper should also present a clearly reasoned alternative, supported by scholarly research.

• Abstract
• What is the problem? Be sure to narrow your problem enough to allow a focused examination.
• What are the individual and social implications of this problem? Discussion of implications should be supported by accurate research data.
• What do the experts say about the problem?
• What have we, as a society, done about this problem? Consider public policies and other, less formal responses.
• How are public policies and other, less formal responses working?
• Describe an alternative solution to the problem.
• Discuss why the alternative is, or can be, an effective response to the problem. Remember to consider negative consequences of the alternative response.
• Conclude with your thoughts about your chosen social problem. This is a good place to include personal opinions, assuming you wish to share them in a research paper.

In short, define a problem, discuss the response, and provide alternative responses to the problem. For example, your problem could be drug use/abuse, with a focus on prescription drug abuse among teenagers. Your description of the problems should be fact based, relying on expert opinion. Your alternative can be an adjustment of current policy or a new direction. For example, you may propose longer prison sentences, or legalization of all drugs. Be creative, although suggestions must be supported by scholarly research.

Annotated Bibliography: The purpose of creating a list of sources is to assist you in organizing and evaluating your research. The list should include the following information for each source (minimum of five):

• Name of the source, including the complete bibliographic citation in proper APA format.
• Summary of the source (at least one paragraph) including how this source will contribute to your paper.

The paper must be three to five pages in length and formatted according to APA style. You must use at least five scholarly resources (at least three of which can be found in the Ashford Online Library) other than the textbook to support your claims and sub-claims. Cite your resources in text and on the reference page.
