Read and analyze a novel, read and analyze a short story, read (or watch) and analyze a play, or watch and analyze a film in which one of the major characters suffers from the DISABILITY (BIPOLAR DISORDER) .

SOURCE REQUIREMENTS:

Make sure to be clear about:

• The author and title of the work you have chosen
• Your rationale for choosing the literary work:
  • Why did you choose this particular work? Why do the author and the work appeal to you?
  • What relationship does it have to your chosen disability?
  • What do you hope to learn about the disability by reading a fictional treatment?

Explain the answers to these questions well, using complete sentences, specific language, specific details, and specific description.

Then, list at least three outside sources you plan to use as you analyze the work of fiction you have chosen. Preferably, you will have at least one scholarly source, but you may also use reviews as long as they refer specifically to the treatment of disability. List the works as they would appear on a works cited page, and supply eight sentences below each works cited entry that summarize how you plan to use the article/source in your essay.

ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY REQUIREMENTS:

MLA citation

First, an annotation includes a summary of the source–at least the thesis and the main points of evidence. The summary should be five to seven sentences long and should provide a clear understanding of what is included in the source.

In addition, the annotation includes an evaluation of the source, providing such information as the authority of the author, the persuasiveness of the argument, the credibility of the source, and the usefulness of the source for analyzing the piece of literature. For the purposes of our assignment, you should certainly include something about the discussion of disability in the article, and why the source will be useful in your essay.

OUTLINE REQUIREMENTS:

You MUST include a full thesis statement (YOUR main idea about the author’s treatment of disability) and at least three main points; please also include at least two points of evidence for each main point (from the literary work and/or from the sources you plan to use).

Your outline should include at least upper-case Roman numerals and upper-case letters (I, I, III with A and B for each). Do not write partial statements or incomplete sentences. Make sure your outline is detailed enough to understand easily. Use complete sentences.

LITERARY ANALYSIS REQUIREMENTS:

It must be a Word document of 750-900 words properly formatted in MLA style.

You must be sure to cite the literary (or cinematic) source as well as all outside reviews and scholarly sources consulted. See the requirements above from this module before you submit the final draft.

Scenario:

The world has been decimated by a nuclear war between the states formerly known as China, Russia and the United States. Central governments no longer exist; zombies swarm the earth in search of brains to eat. Small groups of survivors have banded together in tribes, trying to fight off zombie attacks. To protect themselves, survivors assume zombie identities. A few survivors have written inspiring haikus to deal with their fear.

A rival tribe threatens the well-being that your tribe, the Jackson 5, is eking out farming a small parcel of land, slowly rebuilding a local economy. The rival tribe, Maroon 5, has threatened to take your tribe’s land unless your surrender. Your tribe’s leader, Janet, has asked your advice. What do you advise? Surrender? Fight? Negotiate? Preemptive attack? Explain your recommendation using one or more theories, and then proceed to the next question about rebuilding society.

Steps:

First, explain how you would react to the scenario above, using one or more international relations theories to explain your Zombie’s reactions.

Second, briefly explain your vision for international society (anarchy? cooperation?), using one or more international relations theories to explain your perspective. What should the new international system look like? What will become of the zombies?

Final Paper Draft

This week, you will write a draft of your Final Paper, which is a letter of advice. This should be no more than five pages. Before you submit the paper, you must do the following:

In an effort to ensure you are on the right track for the Final Paper, you will be required to create a first draft of your Final Paper. Here is the final draft template you must use. Please note that this paper should be no more than five pages in length. This does not include the one page for the title and one page for the references. Through completing all of the sections on that template, you will create an introduction with a thesis, a conclusion, and address the following learning objectives:

• Explain the principles of, and barriers to, effective interpersonal communication. You must include explanations of the two principles and their significance. You must also explain at least two barriers to communication and how to overcome them. It is highly recommended that you use an example to think through at least one principle and barrier.
• Analyze the role of communication in developing and maintaining one’s self-concept, self-image, and self-esteem. Be sure to define each term and directly connect each to communication. The best papers will address the links between psychology and communication and the importance of their relationship. You want to explain how ideas of the self-influence how we communication and how our communication exchanges shape how we think conceptualize ourselves.
• Differentiate appropriate levels of self-disclosure (and emotional intelligence – optional) in various relationships. To have a conversation about differentiation, you must first define “self-disclosure.” You have not read the section on emotional intelligence yet, so you are only required to define “self-disclosure.” However, if you want feedback on your coverage of emotional intelligence, go ahead and try to discuss it by reading Chapter 8, section 8.2 in Bevan and Sole. Also, to get to the heart of assessing “appropriateness,” explain the importance of disclosure in various contexts. Explain how it can be beneficial and harmful. • Analyze the impact of gender and culture on interpersonal communications. Explain the relationship between gender, culture, and communication, and how acknowledging these elements is central to becoming an effective communicator. Consider the pros and cons of what are often deemed more “masculine” versus “feminine” forms of communication and how various styles can help us in particular contexts. Explain how culture (as transmitted through communication) trains us about gender norms and how these are potentially linked to how we communicate. And, please review the Week 1 and 2 guidance, as they offer many resources to help you think about culture, gender, and communication.

Notice that you have already covered three of these objectives in other areas of the class. For those sections, please use the work you’ve already created on these topics, in your discussion post or papers and build from there. Take what your instructors have told you about your coverage of those themes and make some adjustments for improvement. For instance, if you were told that you needed to use course material, be sure that you incorporate Bevan and Sole and include full APA citations. Most of the work is going to be developing your section on differentiating appropriate levels of self-disclosure and (if you choose) explaining the role of emotional intelligence in various relationships.

Given that this is a preliminary “draft” of your Final Paper, we strongly advise that you review the Final Paper instructions in Week Five. You will see that you will be writing a letter of advice for a couple or group of co-workers, using the first five course learning objectives of this course.

The Final Paper Draft must contain

Remember, you will need to cite your sources in order to get credit for the use of course and academic materials, which is part of how you will be assessed. Consider the following scenario:

You are an agency supervisor. Two of your female employees are close friends. They are often seen in each other’s office. They have imperious personalities. They go out for drinks after work and socialize with each other on weekends. When one of these two workers becomes upset, the other follows suit. If the two argue with each other, there is tension in the office. In staff meetings these two workers will sometimes gang up on other workers who may disagree with their ideas and proposals regarding clients and agency functioning. Some workers have complained about how these two workers can intimidate other workers. More recently your agency has experienced a high staff turnover.

In a 1-2 page paper address the following:

• What are the salient features associated with this case?
• What is the supervisor’s primary responsibility in responding to this behavior?
• Discuss the role that diverse perspectives could be playing in creating some of the conflict
• Why is understanding diversity as important when working on a team?
• How can these two resolve the issue so that they are both demonstrating valuable and meaningful contribution to their tasks and work teams?
• Identify a minimum of 3-4 concepts and definitions from your various human services courses and explain how these concepts are evident and relevant to this scenario. For example:
  
  “In the Rosales scenario there are several examples of human service concepts and terms. One term that is relevant to this scenario is cultural assimilation. Cultural assimilation refers to process by which a person from a differing culture adapts and changes behaviors to meet the demands of the new culture (Jones 2016). The family will need to learn English and adapt to the US culture as part of their assimilation process.”
