Final Paper Preparation

This assignment will prepare you for the Final Paper by initiating the research process and will help you map out the specific events and developments you will explore in depth in your paper. Review the instructions for the Final Paper laid out in Week Five of the online course or the Components of Course Evaluation section of the Course Guide before beginning this project. For your Final Paper, you must discuss at least six specific events or developments related to your chosen topic.

For this assignment, you will choose your topic and the six (or more) related events and developments that span the years 1865 to the present. You will then work on the research for your essay, and develop a draft of your introduction with a thesis statement. For your research, you must compile at least eight scholarly sources; choose at least six of your scholarly secondary sources from the Ashford University Library and include at least two primary sources. Primary sources are documents or artifacts that were created at the time of a historical event or by someone who personally experienced a historical event. Primary sources can be newspaper or magazine articles, books, letters, speeches, photographs, oral histories, paintings, or any other record of a historical event. The best place to find scholarly sources is the Ashford University Library’s research databases and eBook collection.

In a paragraph or two at the beginning of the paper, identify the events and developments you will discuss in your Final Paper, explain why you believe they are significant, and state your thesis. Your thesis should be a one or two sentence summary of the main conclusions that you drew while researching your topic and that you will support in your paper by constructing a logical argument based on evidence (sources). 

You will then create a summary of sources by completing an annotated bibliography. To create an annotated bibliography, list each source in full APA reference format. Then, beneath each source write a one or two paragraph explanation of the important information in the source and how you plan to use it in your paper. The annotations must be in your own words. It is not acceptable to copy and paste the abstract or any other text. You must have annotations for all eight sources. 

Please notice that you have been provided with many wonderful primary and secondary sources in the required reading and recommended reading sections for each week. Feel free to use these sources when constructing your assignment. The intention of the group is to simulate being assigned to a “committee” at your fire department. The “committee” has been assigned to Implement the 16 Firefighter Life Safety Initiatives. Consider reviewing Chapter 12 from our text to gain insight into the process of implementation.

OUR GROUP IS DOING 3RD LIFE INITIATIVE

Each group will submit a coordinated presentation utilizing Powerpoint, Keynote or Google slides, summarizing their findings from the additional research from the Everyone Goes Home Website for the assigned Life Safety Initiative. The completed presentation will include (1) Introduction slide including students names and Initiative, (8) slides supporting the recommendations and (1) conclusion slide – totaling (10) slides. Group members may add a shirt 1 min video clip to enhance the presentation. (The 1 min Video is only optional and will not alter the final grade – since some students may not have an option to provide a video.)

The group leader will be responsible for combining slides, including student names, and sharing with group members once all members have submitted their findings. (If an assigned student group member does not participate, please include there name and state did not participate)

While each group is specifically focused on one Life Safety Initiative, your group MAY consider answering one or more of the following questions as part of the presentation. You have been recently hired as Public Relations Director by Smart Media Education, a non-profit organization whose mission is to educate youth and parents on a critical approach to consuming modern media. In one month your first big event is to present to a group of the nation’s high school juniors and seniors at the annual Youth Leadership Conference in Washington D.C. Approximately five students from each of the 48 contiguous states will be in the audience.

Your objective is two-fold: 1) Demonstrate that media consumption requires a critical thinking approach and 2) Explain the impact of media on society.

The assignment: In this assignment you will prepare for your presentation in Washington D.C.

Part One: the first part of your presentation objective

Identify two television commercials that each uses a different logical fallacy to persuade consumers. You must provide a link to video of the commercial.

For each commercial

• Quickly summarize the commercial. What is happening and what is the commercial specifically convincing the audience to think?
• Identify the logical fallacy used in the commercial and support your choice with details from the commercial.
• Present your findings in an essay of two pages minimum.

Part Two: the second part of the objective

Find some research/statistics about media’s impact on society. There are many areas to consider, so choose an area you believe has a significant impact. (examples: advertising, movies, television, video games, social media, etc.)

• Summarize the research. Who prepared and published it? What does it say?
• Describe the validity of the source. How do you know the source is credible?
• Explain why you chose this research. Why should your audience care? (See the story in the project introduction.)
• Present your findings in an essay of two pages minimum.

Part Three: the presentation

Now it’s time to pull together the preparation you’ve done for your event in Washington D. C. In this section of the assignment you will a speaker’s outline for your presentation and a sample of your presentation itself.

• Your speaker’s notes should be completed in a Word document. These will be your notes as you present so make sure they are complete and include the following:
  • An introduction
  • An overview of what you’ll be presenting and why. (Why should these high school students care what you have to say?)
  • Your findings on television commercials
  • Your findings on the impact of media on society
  • A conclusion that summarizes and reinforces the reasons that it’s important to use critical thinking when consuming media
• Create a PowerPoint presentation from your notes. Using screen capture software, record your presentation and submit a link to the recording along with your speaker’s notes.
  • There are many free versions of screen capture software. Ask your instructor for recommendations if you don’t have a favorite.
