Episodes in which an Environmental Hazard Caused Adverse Health Outcomes in
Humans. 

The
three major and historical events that I have identified are the deadly gas
release of Bhopal, nuclear disaster at Chernobyl and the Hiroshima bombing. 

Which environmental hazard,
such as the pollutant or pollutants, caused the most adverse health outcomes
and why?

The deadly gas release of
Bhopal, India was made up of methyl isocyanate (MIC) gases that were expelled
into the atmosphere from a factory developing pesticides, which killed 3,800
people. There were several explosions
at the Chernobyl nuclear reactor that caused the radiation to leak out. The nuclear disaster in Chernobyl had
immediate effects on its victims as well as long term.  The bombing
at Hiroshima caused radiation to be emitted and caused radiation to be absorbed
into people, crops, animals, etc.

What
are the various adverse health outcomes that occurred as a result of exposure
to the environmental hazard?

The release of this hazardous
gas from the Bhopal incident caused many people to pass away from lung failure
and those that were able to live out the first couple of days had severe respiratory
complications as well as other life threatening symptoms. The long term effects from inhaling these gas
included brain related issues such as headaches, as well as effects on the
major systems of the body.

The nuclear disaster at
Chernobyl had devastating effects on the people that lived in Chernobyl as well
as the outlining countries such as Russia and the Ukraine.  The radiation expelled into the air and
caused many people to have radiation poisoning, develop cancers especially thyroid
as well other cancers.

The bombing at Hiroshima
showed effects on its victims such as radiation sickness and radiation burns on
the skin.

What
are the steps that were taken to prevent the adverse health outcomes from occurring?
Should there be any other step that was necessary to prevent the adverse health
outcome? Explain.

Suggest the ways to prevent future occurrences of such
episodes.

Is there an association between environmental hazards
and adverse health outcomes in humans? Why or why not?

Analyze and explain the exposure-disease relationship
for each of these three events.

What do you think is the impact of these events on the
communities where they occurred?

Written Report:

1. Report will reflect an effort by each student in research into some an aspect juvenile delinquency and justice.

2. The paper must be submitted electronically through Moodle under “Turn-it In.” Because of this, the paper must be typed in a word processing program such as Word. Do not use Wordpad or Notepad. These will not preserve the format. In addition, all assignment should be submitted in Word.

3. Report must be 7 to 10 pages in length. It must be typewritten and double-spaced, using a size 12 font, not boldface.

This includes title/cover and works cited page. Only Arial or Times New Roman fonts are permitted.

4. Report should be written using correct grammar and punctuation.

5. Report will be written using the APA format with internal documentation and a works cited page listing at least four references. Only one reference from the Internet is permitted, not blogs or someone’s opinion. Major news sources are ok (MSNBC, FOX, CNN, ABC, CBS, etc. Government and university sites are usually ok, but check first. DO NOT USE WIKIPEDIA.ORG!! If you do, it will not be counted as a source.]

6. Report shall be submitted no later than the date indicated on the class schedule. Late reports will not be accepted. Papers may be submitted early.

7. Papers will be graded along the following guidelines:

a. Any failure to comply with APA format results in the loss of 20 points (this includes form of bibliography entries, notes, format of pages, etc.). 20 points will be lost for each lack of compliance with APA. If your

page numbers are out of compliance, that’s minus 20 points. If a bibliographic entry is out of compliance, that’s another 20 points, etc.

b. Failure to comply with any requirements found in syllabus is minus 20 points (this includes lack of stapling). 20 points will be lost for each reference less than the requirement of 4. However, a complete lack of references will result in a zero.

c. The lack of a works cited page or parenthetical citations of references (internal notes referencing your works cited) will result in a zero. This constitutes plagiarism (claiming someone else’s work as your own) & is illegal.

d. 20 points will be deducted for every page that the report is short of the full 7 page requirement. The title/cover and works cited pages count in the 7 page length.

8. The topic of the paper can reflect the student’s interest in a specific problem related to Juvenile Justice and Delinquency, Students will be allowed flexibility in pursuing heir own interests in choosing a topic, but the instructor will offer guidelines and discuss potential topics.

Presentation of the Problem

Janice Ferrara, a 29-year-old European American, has been arrested for reckless endangerment and driving while under the influence, with a blood alcohol level of 0.10%.Police were called to the scene when she missed a curve and ran her car into a tree, seriously injuring her 8-year-old daughter Francesca.Her daughter was being loaded unconscious into an ambulance when officers arrived.

Janice had also hit her head on the steering wheel.She had some whiplash injuries in her neck and back, as well as other bruises and strains.She was dizzy and somewhat disoriented when officers arrived.She was crying hard, screaming at times, and rambling tangentially from one topic to another.Officers had difficulty following what she was saying, but some elements were terror over the injuries to her daughter, fear of facing her husband, and agreement that her boss was right about her incompetence.The officers had difficulty getting her to focus on their questions about the accident.

By the time you met with Janice two weeks later, Francesca was awake, and had been found to have some brain injury.She had some trouble accessing words, and weakness in her left arm and leg.As a result, she was walking with difficulty, and was in physical therapy. It was not yet certain the extent to which these difficulties might improve with time.

Psychosocial History

Janice was brought up by both biological parents.She has an older sister and younger brother.All of these family members are still living.She says that there were no serious financial problems or arguments in the household.She and her siblings all did well academically.When asked about a joyful memory, she said that they got a kitten once.She did not remember other happy times, and said that there were not unhappy times either.

Janice was brought up Catholic and met her husband Marco through church functions.Marco is two years older than Janice.When asked what attracted her to him, she said that they share the same values, both being Catholic.She had once thought about becoming a teacher, but she and Marco decided to get married and raise a family instead.She became pregnant with her daughter soon after they married.She expressed strong beliefs that she should stay home with her daughter, just as her mother did.

Once her daughter started school, Janice took a part time job at the local grocery store during school hours.However, lately her boss told her she will have to improve at her cashiering job if she wants to keep it, and told her she is generally incompetent.

Janice says that she “hardly drinks,” “a couple of glasses of wine in the evening,” “maybe a little more if she worked that day.”

Behavioral Observations

When you met Janice, she was appropriately dressed and groomed in a simple blouse and jeans, with no jewelry or make-up.She was quiet-spoken, a little slow to respond, and cried easily.Her answers made sense and were not rambling, but sometimes she forgot what the question was, and had to be reminded before she could answer.Her answers were usually the bare minimum needed to respond to your questions, with no embellishments.She made little eye contact and instead looked mostly at your shoes.

When asked about her family relations, she had little to say except that they were OK.Then, contradicting herself, she said that, even though she perceives Marco as a “good person,” she has always been unhappy.From this, she reasoned that she “probably can’t be happy married to any man.”She could not name a specific problem between them, and said that he should have married someone else.She explained that Marco and Francesca would be better off with a different wife and mother.

When asked about her legal charges, she first said she had no opinion, and expressed a willingness to just accept whatever the outcome might be.She then added that she, “did a terrible thing and should be punished.”

Task Identification

You are a forensic mental health evaluator being asked to evaluate Ms. Ferrara and make service recommendations.You are working closely with the Forensic Psychologist who will be evaluating her competence to proceed, and mental status at the time of the offense. You are to produce a written case report addressing the questions below.The report will be submitted to the appropriate supervisor and may be presented to the court.
