Once you have viewed the case scenario, respond to the following questions, with thorough explanations and well-supported rationale:

1. These workers state the “only thing they have is their work.” This statement suggests that, without this work, they would have a lower standard of living. Should we inflict western values on this society? Bring in the concepts of social responsibility, integrity, and other business ethics practices.

2. From Nike’s standpoint, is this a fair assessment of their ethical standards? Explain some of the ethical issues that Nike is facing in the case.

3. Research what Nike has done to improve this situation since this 2011 video. Include the use of codes of ethics and other ethical standards implemented within the organization.

4. Is your opinion of Nike any different now after viewing this video? Would this change your buying behavior with respect to Nike products?

Ethics in business relationships include both the external and internal relationships that develop around the organization. For this assignment, we will focus on the internal relationships that develop inside the organization. Studies have indicated the more positive the environment within the organization, the more productive the employees.

Question 1: Problems may arise when different groups have different associated meanings with the same symbol. For example, Wiccan high school students are often prohibited from wearing the swastika symbol to school. What do you think should be done in these situations? •Recently, Google announced that it was offering Google Consumer Surveys (www.google.com/insights/consumersurvey) to anyone wanting to do marketing research. Google says that the service is for anyone from Fortune 500 companies to “the local bike shop.”It is promoted as fast, accurate, and a low cost alternative to traditional marketing research. The Google survey website notes, “With Google Consumer Surveys, you choose your target audience, type your question and watch the results roll in within hours. Get complete results in days; not weeks.” Google notes that users can test product concepts, track brands, measure consumer satisfaction and more.

•In an interview with Paul McDonald, a creator of Google Consumer Surveys, he addresses several concerns from the marketing research industry about the new service. He says, “I think your concerns about the quality of the data from self-service survey platforms are well known in the research community,” McDonald wrote. “As the mantra goes, ‘Garbage in, garbage out’… We try to encourage survey best practices in our help content, program policies and by providing survey templates to guide new researchers. In the end we are providing a platform which can be used to create professional and statistically accurate surveys.”

Questions:

1. Go to Google’s Consumer Survey website. After clicking through how it works, and examples, do you feel competent to create an Internet survey? Why or why not?

2. Do you think the marketing research industry should be concerned about Google Consumer Surveys? Why?

3. Most traditional consumer surveys conclude with a series of demographic questions such as gender, age, location, and so forth. Google Consumer Surveys don’t ask these questions. Instead it infers approximate demographic and location information using the respondent’s IP address and DoubleClick cookie. The respondent’s nearest city can be determined from their IP address. Income and urban density can be computed by mapping the location to census tracts and using census data to infer income and urban density. Gender and age group can be inferred from the types of pages the respondent has previously visited in the Google Display Network using the DoubleClick cookie. Google says that is information is used to ensure each survey receives a representative sample and to enable survey researchers to see how sub-populations answered questions. Inferring this demographic data enables Consumer Surveys researchers to ask fewer questions in a survey, which in turn increases the number of consumers that respond. Do you think this methodology is better than simply asking the demographic questions? Do you see any problems with Google’s methodology?

Choice Theory

Social scientists who study human behavior have developed theories that attempt to explain what drives an individual’s choices as well as what environmental factors influence individual human behavior and how they influence it. One theory on human behavior you may be aware of is Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Maslow (as cited in Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2016, p. 505-507) stated that individuals first strive to fulfill their basic physical needs. Then, the individuals, as long as they are successful at each stage, continue through a hierarchy of needs, obtaining each until they reach the self-actualization stage of self-fulfillment. For this week’s assignment, you focus on another theory of human behavior—Glasser’s choice theory.

To prepare for this Assignment, consider what you learned about choice theory in this week’s resources as well as what you learned about the person and environment as it relates to young and middle adulthood.

Submit by Day 7 a 2- to 4-page paper that answers the following questions:

• How does choice theory explain the human behavior of individuals in the young and middle adulthood phases of the life span?
