Vision

The reading highlighted how individuals will personalize the culture based on their own values often asking the question, “Are my values similar to those of others in the organization?” I think this really resonates with the organization’s vision.

In another resource, Palmer, Dunford & Akin (2006) list several definitions of a vision as:
“A clear mental picture of a future goal created jointly by a group for the benefit of other people which is capable of inspiring and motivating those whose support is necessary for its achievement.” (Johnson, 1999:337)
“[A]n ideal that … represents or reflects the shared values to which the organization should aspire.” (Kirkpatrick et al., 2002:139)
“[A] hypothetical cognitive image that pulls together beliefs about ideal ways of doing things and what the future can be.” (Thoms and Greenberger, 1995, cited in Thoms and Greenberger, 1998:4)
“[A] set of idealized goals established by the leader that represent a perspective shared by followers.” (Conger and Kanungo, 1998:156, cited in Berson et al., 2001:55)
“[A] picture or view of the future. Something not yet real, but imagined. What the organization could and should look like. Part analytical and part emotional.” (Thornberry, 1997:28)
“[A]n orientation point that guides a company’s movement in a specific direction. If the vision is realistic and appeals both to the emotions and the intelligence of employees, it can integrate and direct a company.” (Hinterhuber and Popp, 1992:4)

“[A] picture of a destination aspired to, an end state to be achieved via the change. It reflects the larger goal people need to keep in mind while concentrating on concrete daily activities.” (Kanter et al., 1992:509)

Using that list of definitions, are there any that resonate more with you than others? Using that list, or your own ideas, what would be your definition of a vision? Does defining it really matter? Why or why not? How do you separate vision from mission, planning, and goals? Is this an important distinction to make? How aligned is vision with these other concepts in your organization?

Change & Anxiety

At a personal level, change can arouse considerable anxiety about letting go of the known and moving to an uncertain future. At the organization level, resistance to change can come from three sources. Technical resistance comes from the habit of following common procedures and the consideration of sunk costs invested in the status quo (Cummings & Worley, 2015). Political resistance can arise when organizational changes threaten powerful stakeholders, such as top executive or staff personnel, or call into question the past decisions of leaders (Cummings & Worley, 2015). Organization change often implies a different allocation of already scarce resources, such as capital, training budgets, and talented people. Finally, cultural resistance takes the form of systems and procedures that reinforce the status quo, promoting conformity to existing values, norms, and assumptions about how things should operate. There are at least three major strategies for positively dealing with resistance to change (Cummings & Worley, 2015):
Empathy and support
Communication
Participation and involvement

23-year-old Native American

Native Americans have a unique culture with particular socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle choices that pertain to this group of people. It is critical to provide culturally appropriate and competent care based on that patient and history. In understanding different cultures and individuals it important not to assume but learn for that patient specifically regarding beliefs; however, it can be helpful to have a frame of reference for different groups of people. Researching and asking questions it essential. Interesting facts presented by the U.S. Census Bureau include but are not limited to the following: Native Americans have a 71% completion rate of high school education, and 11% have a bachelor’s education. Native Americans and Alaska Native are less likely to be employed in management or professional related jobs. The majority of their jobs lie in services like construction, maintenance, transportation like moving material, and in farming, fishing, and forestry. The rate of poverty is higher amongst this group than the total U.S. population. Around one-third of Native American live on a reservation, and the median age of people living in these areas are younger than those living off the reservation (Ogunwole, 2006).

Sensitive Issue

When discussing culture, there are some topics that are considered sensitive to the population. Most pertinently spiritual and lifestyle choices related to culture are typically sensitive. There are sacred instructions that many Native American’s form their beliefs on. What is considered to be of utmost importance is respect – respect for the Earth, respect for the Great Spirit, and respect for humankind. They believe that to look after one’s well-being is both mind and body, and they should take full responsibility for their actions. As you treat Native American patients ensure you are giving them your highest respect and honor; thus, building bridges towards addressing sensitive topics and allowing them to take control over the situation (The Creator to Native People, n.d.).

Targeted Questions

Based on the information above and in the case-study, I would focus on these areas to build the patient’s health history and assess risks.

1. What do you think your problem is? This is a board question that avoids stereotyping or assuming the patient’s problem is pot and alcohol consumption.

2. How bad is your sickness/ anxiety? This question could lead to a discussion regarding the frequency of drinking and the smoking of pot. As seen in the physical exam, it is notable that patient had poor dentition – many carries and hepatomegaly indicating frequent consumption of both alcohol and pot.

3. What worries you most about your sickness? This question shows the severity and focuses your education on what the patient desires most.

4. What do you think we should do to help you with your sickness? This question helps clarify what goals or outcomes the patient would like from seeking medical assistance.

5. Have you sought out any help from anyone else? Due to the patient being Native American is it likely that the patient may have sought help from a Native American medicine man (Ball, Dains, Flynn, Solomon & Stewart, 2015)

Professional Interview & Site Visit – 15 points

Students will locate a facility that assists individuals with psychiatric disabilities and interview an employee working with these individuals. Students will write his or her a description of the facility including, but not limited to, location, who are the clients, services provided, who are all involved with working with clients and a brief statement of what they do, external professionals, and funding. The federal government and each state have their own criminal statutes, court system, prosecutors, and police agencies. 1. Put yourself in the role of a prosecutor and explain the importance of the final report to the prosecution of a case. Further, analyze the possible impact of poorly completed final reports on the prosecution of a case.
2. Review Figure 21.1 “The Use of Evidence in the Stages of the Criminal Justice Process” in Chapter 21 of the text and specify the manner in which each stage of the criminal justice process helps to build a successfully litigated action. Provide a rationale to support your response.
3. Define a criminal investigator’s role in preparing a case for court. Analyze the manner in which the investigator cooperates with the prosecutor to enhance the courtroom presentation.
4. Differentiate not guilty and acquitted. Give your opinion as to whether or not an acquittal means that the investigator failed. Support your position.
