Learning to identify and appropriately resolve conflicts that may arise over differences in perspectives is an especially critical skill. Your personal style of conflict resolution is influenced by past experiences, thoughts and beliefs, and personality. Conflicts may be resolved in different ways depending on the context and the individual attempting to resolve them.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Search the Internet for “conflict resolution steps.”
  • Select a website that contains a broadly applicable set of steps for resolving interpersonal conflicts.

Old Technology Interview

Interview: Old Technology

In this Assignment, you will be conducting an interview of a
person who uses old technology and compiling your findings in the form of a
formal essay. You will format your written component in APA manuscript style and
use proper citation. Be sure to review the Assignment rubric in the Syllabus
before you start your paper.

There are many types of old technology still used in today’s
society including printing presses, looms, rotary phones, and even
first-generation computers. For this project, you will locate someone in your
community using some type of old technology and interview him or her and write
an essay about your findings.

There are three parts to this project:

Part 1: Research and Selection

Follow these steps to begin your Assignment.

  1. Research what kinds of old technology
are being used in your community.
  2. Select one of your choices.
  3. Email your instructor with the name of
the person you have chosen for approval.
  4. Do a preliminary research on this
    technology via the internet.
  5. Contact the office to schedule a time
when you can visit the office and interview the person.

Part 2: The Interview

Follow these steps to conduct the interview. Prior to the
interview, decide how you will transcribe or document the interviewee’s
responses. You may want to bring a recording device, a video camera, or a
notebook and a pen.

  1. Arrive on time dressed in a professional
    manner.
  2. Introduce yourself stating who you are,
what school you are attending, and the purpose of the interview.
  3. Obtain the interviewee’s credentials –
name, title, contact information, and email address if available.
  4. Prepare your questions ahead of time.
    Here are some suggested questions:

    1. What type of technology do you use?
      Why?
    2. How long has the technology been in
      existence?
    3. When did you begin to use the
      technology?
    4. Do you have any future plans for
      technology use?

You are certainly not limited to these questions, but this will
get you started.

Part 3: Write your paper

For this Assignment you are writing a formal essay. Formal writing
is writing that generally does not use slang, personal references (I, you, or
me, except in some instances like employment cover letters), or shorthand
(texting language, abbreviations, or contractions). It is writing that is
addressed to a professional audience for a professional purpose. It is written
in Standard American English, which means it adheres to conventions that are
deemed to be common and proper in professional correspondence or documentation.
Often, formal writing will employ language that is specific to a particular
field of study or a certain profession or discipline, such as business, science,
or information technology.

Before you begin writing your paper, organize your interview. If
you videotaped it or used audio, transcribe your answers. Writing them down will
help you organize your findings.

  1. State the name of the person you
interviewed and what type of technology he or she uses.
  2. Why did you choose this person?
  3. Based upon your interview address the
    following:

    1. What type of technology does this person
      use? Why?
    2. How long has the technology been in
      existence?
    3. When did he or she begin to use the
      technology?
    4. What are his or her plans for future
      technology use?
    5. Conclusion – What have learned from this
project? Has this project given you a “fresh” new outlook? Are you considering
trying to use an old technology?

Your project should be 750-1000 words in length and adhere to the
following standards:

  • Double spaced
  • Written in size 12 font – Times New
    Roman
  • 1 “ margins on all sides
  • Separate cover page and reference
    page

Constructive Dividends, Redeptions, and Related Party Losses

Suppose you are a CPA hired to represent a client
that is currently under examination by the IRS. The client is the president and
95% shareholder of a building supply sales and warehousing business. He also
owns 50% of the stock of a construction company. The client’s son owns the
remaining 50% of the stock of the construction company. The client has received
a Notice of Proposed Adjustments (NPA) on three (3) significant issues related
to the building supply business for the years under examination. The issues
identified in the NPA are unreasonable compensation, stock redemptions, and a
rental loss. Additional facts regarding the issues are reflected below:

    • Unreasonable
compensation: The taxpayer receives a salary of $10 million composed of a
$5 million base salary plus 5% of gross receipts not to exceed $5
million. The total gross receipts of the building supply business are
$300 million. The NPA by the IRS disallows the salary based on 5% of
gross receipts as a constructive dividend.
    • Stock
redemptions: During the audit period, the construction company redeemed
50% of the outstanding stock owned by the client and 50% of the stock
owned by the client’s son, leaving each with the same ownership
percentage of 50%. The IRS treated the redemption as a distribution under
      Section 301 of the IRC.
    • Rental
loss: The rental loss results from a building leased to the construction
company owned by the client and his son.

Use the Internet and Strayer databases to research
the rules and income tax laws regarding unreasonable compensation, stock
redemptions treated as dividends and related party losses. Be sure to use the
six (6) step tax research process in Chapter 1 and demonstrated in Appendix A
of your textbook as a guide for your written response.

Write a three to four (3-4) page paper in which you:

  1. Based
on your research and the facts stated in the scenario, prepare a
recommendation for the client in which you advise either acceptance of the
proposed adjustments or further appeal of the issue based on the
    potential for prevailing on appeal.
  2. Create
a tax plan for the future redemption of the client’s stock owned in the
construction company that will not be taxed according to Section 301 of the
    IRC.
  3. Propose
a strategy for the client to receive similar amounts in compensation in
the future and avoid the taxation as a constructive dividend.
  4. Use
the six (6) step tax research process, located in Chapter 1 and
demonstrated in Appendix A of the textbook, to record your research for
    communications to the client.

Your assignment must follow these formatting
requirements:

    • Be
typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch
margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or
school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional
      instructions.
    • Include
a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name,
the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and
the reference page are not included in the required assignment page
      length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated
with this assignment are:

    • Analyze
tax issues regarding corporate formations, capital structures, income
tax, non-liquidating distributions, or other corporate levies.
    • Prepare
client, internal, and administrative documents that appropriately convey
the results of tax research and planning.
    • Create
an approach to tax research that results in credible and current
      resources.
    • Use
technology and information resources to research issues in organizational
      tax research and planning.
    • Write
clearly and concisely about organizational tax research and planning
      using proper writing mechanics.

The Art and Science of Purchasing Coal

For your third case study, review Case 21, NEP: The Art and Science of Purchasing Coal (pp. 514-518 of

your textbook) and then, after an introductory paragraph, provide a summary of the situation. In

subsequent paragraphs, address the following:

1. As purchasing manager for NEP, what is your evaluation of the various alternatives open to Deon

for the purchase of coal?

2. As the purchasing manager for NEP, what recommendations would you make to Deon regarding

the purchase of coal?

Present the key learnings that came out of the situation and make recommendations to improve the

situation presented. Consider the Saint Leo core value of respect as you consider your decisions on the

best ways to address the situation. In your paper, you will need to show how excellence factored into your

decisions.

The paper should conclude with a summary paragraph that answers the question, “why should anyone

Sales Leadership Philosophy

Sales Leadership Philosophy

Create a clear and cohesive sales leadership philosophy statement. As
you do so, consider the specific challenges and opportunities
experienced by leaders in sales and marketing.

Deliverable

  1. Analyze a personal leadership approach in relation to an
established sales theory. Recommend one or more leadership theories that
either exemplify your current approach or that explain an approach you
would like to pursue. As with the sales philosophy you completed in
Assessment 1, be specific: Identify the ideas, authors, scholars, and/or
public figures that most closely represent your methods and beliefs
about leading a sales team. Explain why the theory you have chosen would
be likely to benefit a leader with your set of goals.
  2. Using the above leadership theories and/or models, describe a
typical relationship between yourself and a salesperson on your team.
Consider also whether there is anything unusual about leadership of
salespeople (as compared with leading the staff of other departments
within an organization). Alternately, if you have not had a leadership
experience yet, hypothesize what these everyday interactions would look
    like according to this approach.
  3. Identify a leadership approach that exemplifies your own beliefs
about ethical leadership practices. What does it mean to treat your
subordinates fairly? Be sure to support your response with
    professionally reputable sources.
  4. Describe how you would coordinate the efforts of one or more team
members located in a different country. What sorts of arrangements would
you need to make? How would you adjust your approach to communications,
both with the individual(s) and your larger team?

(You may complete the requirements of this assessment in any order you wish. You do not need to follow the listed order.)

Additional Requirements

  • Written communication is free of errors that detract from the overall message.
  • APA formatting: Resources and citations are formatted according to current APA style and formatting.
  • Number of resources: Minimum of four resources.
  • Length of paper: 3 to 6 typed, double-spaced pages.
  • Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 point.

MPA thesis questions

Purpose of the
Study 2-3 pages

Limitations
of the Study 1-2 pages

Purpose of The Study

What and why you
wish to pursue this topic.

A. “The purpose
statement should provide a specific and accurate synopsis of the overall
purpose of the study” (Locke, Spirduso, & Silverman, 1987, p. 5). If the
purpose is not clear to the writer, it cannot be clear to the reader.

B. Briefly define
and delimit the specific area of the research. You will revisit this in greater
detail in a later section.

C. Foreshadow the
hypotheses to be tested or the questions to be raised, as well as the
significance of the study. These will require specific elaboration in
subsequent sections.

D. Key points to
keep in mind when preparing a purpose statement.

1. Try to
incorporate a sentence that begins with “The purpose of this study is . .
.”This will clarify your own mind as to the purpose and it will inform the
reader directly and explicitly.

2. Clearly
identify and define the central concepts or ideas of the study. Some committee
Chairs prefer a separate section to this end. When defining terms, make a
judicious choice between using descriptive or operational definitions.

3. Identify the
specific method of inquiry to be used.

4. Identify the
unit of analysis in the study.

Limitations of The Study

All studies
have limitations
. However, it is
important that you restrict your discussion to limitations related to the
research problem under investigation. For example, if a meta-analysis of
existing literature is not a stated purpose of your research, it should not be
discussed as a limitation. Do not apologize for not addressing issues that
you did not promise to investigate in your paper.

Here are examples
of limitations you may need to describe and to discuss how they possibly
impacted your findings. Descriptions of limitations should be stated in the
past tense.

Possible Methodological
Limitations

Sample size — the number of the units of analysis you use in your
study is dictated by the type of research problem you are investigating. Note
that, if your sample size is too small, it will be difficult to find
significant relationships.from
the data, as statistical tests normally require a larger sample size to ensure
a representative distribution of the population and to be considered
representative of groups of people to whom results will be generalized or
transferred.

Lack
of available and/or reliable data
— a lack of data or of reliable data will likely require you
to limit the scope of your analysis, the size of your sample, or it can be a
significant obstacle in finding a trend and a meaningful relationship. You need
to not only describe these limitations but to offer reasons why you believe
data is missing or is unreliable. However, do not just throw up your hands in
frustration; use this as an opportunity to describe the need for future
research.

Lack
of prior research studies on the topic
— citing prior research studies forms the basis of your
literature review and helps lay a foundation for understanding the research
problem you are investigating. Depending on the currency or scope of your
research topic, there may be little, if any, prior research on your topic. Before assuming this to be true, consult
with a librarian!
In cases when a
librarian has confirmed that there is a lack of prior research, you may be
required to develop an entirely new research typology [for example, using an
exploratory rather than an explanatory research design]. Note that this
limitation can serve as an important opportunity to describe the need for
further research.

Measure used
to collect the data
— sometimes it
is the case that, after completing your interpretation of the findings, you
discover that the way in which you gathered data inhibited your ability to
conduct a thorough analysis of the results. For example, you regret not
including a specific question in a survey that, in retrospect, could have
helped address a particular issue that emerged later in the study. Acknowledge
the deficiency by stating a need in future research to revise the specific
method for gathering data.

Self-reported
data
— whether you are relying on
pre-existing self-reported data or you are conducting a qualitative research
study and gathering the data yourself, self-reported data is limited by the
fact that it rarely can be independently verified. In other words, you have to
take what people say, whether in interviews, focus groups, or on
questionnaires, at face value. However, self-reported data contains several
potential sources of bias that should be noted as limitations: (1) selective
memory (remembering or not remembering experiences or events that occurred at
some point in the past); (2) telescoping [recalling events that occurred at one
time as if they occurred at another time]; (3) attribution [the act of
attributing positive events and outcomes to one’s own agency but attributing
negative events and outcomes to external forces]; and, (4) exaggeration [the
act of representing outcomes or embellishing events as more significant than is
actually suggested from other data].

Possible Limitations of the
Researcher

Access — if your study depends on having access to people,
organizations, or documents and, for whatever reason, access is denied or
otherwise limited, the reasons for this needs to be described.

Longitudinal
effects
— unlike your professor, who
can literally devote years [even a lifetime] to studying a single research
problem, the time available to investigate a research problem and to measure
change or stability within a sample is constrained by the due date of your
assignment. Be sure to choose a topic that does not require an excessive amount
of time to complete the literature review, apply the methodology, and gather
and interpret the results. If you are unsure, talk to your professor.

Cultural
and other type of bias
— we all have biases, whether we are conscience
of them or not. Bias occurs when a person, place, or thing is viewed or shown
in a consistently inaccurate way. It is usually negative, though one can have a
positive bias as well. When proofreading your paper, be especially critical in
reviewing how you have stated a problem, selected the data to be studied, what
may have been omitted, and the manner in which you have ordered events.
Consider how you have chosen to represent a person, place or thing, to name a
phenomenon, or to use possible words with a positive or negative connotation.
Note that if you detect bias in prior research, it must be acknowledged and you
should explain what measures were taken to avoid perpetuating bias.
