PART 1: CUBING

Cubing requires you to think about your topic from six different perspectives. After you’ve chosen a topic for the course research paper, you’ll give yourself a set amount of time (four to five minutes, for instance) to respond to each of the six prompts listed below:

• Describing: Describe any physical characteristics related to your topic. What does it look like? What color, shape, texture, or size is it? Identify its parts.
• Comparing: How is your topic similar to other topics/things? How is it different?
• Associating: What other topic/thing does your topic make you think of? Can you compare it to anything else in your experience? Don’t be afraid to be creative here—include everything that comes to mind.
• Analyzing: Look at your topic’s components. How are these parts related? How is it put together? Where did it come from? Where is it going?
• Applying: What can you do with your topic? What uses does it have?
• Arguing: What arguments can you make for or against your topic?

Using the provided worksheet, write and respond to a topic based on what you already know, but don’t let limitations in prior knowledge stop you. Instead, use this as a chance to identify areas related to your topic that you need to know more about and, perhaps, make notes regarding where you can look to find the information you need.

PART 2: INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH AND THESIS STATEMENT

After completing your cubing activity, complete the following tasks:

• Create an introductory paragraph (three to five sentences) on the topic you have chosen for your potentially publishable, persuasion-based research paper. Be sure to include a strong thesis statement (see Step 2). An introductory paragraph should begin with a hook (a question, famous quote, definition, statistic, etc.) in the first sentence, and it should lead naturally to your thesis statement. A well-constructed introductory paragraph should be at least seven to ten sentences long.
• Create a thesis statement/main point for the topic you have chosen to work with for your potentially publishable, persuasion-based research paper. Recall that a thesis statement should typically be one to two sentences in length and should state the main point/argument for your paper. The thesis statement is usually the last sentence of the introductory paragraph.
• As the final task for this assignment, write a separate paragraph in which you discuss the rhetorical strategy (persuasive technique) you’ve decided to use in your potentially publishable, persuasion-based research paper and why you’ve decided to use it.

The assignment should be nearly about 3000 words.

You are required to identify these weaknesses and provide recommendations for addressing these weaknesses. Most recommendations will require approximately 50 to 100 words. Your answer should satisfy the Marking Criteria discussed below.

Marks will be awarded for:

1. Understanding and discussion of the topic (30 marks).

You are expected to answer each of the questions contained in the assignment. You’re answer should fully address the requirements of each question and be in your own words.

Simply restating the contents of the text book, study guide or PowerPoint slides does not show individual understanding of the topic.

Your answers should contain enough discussion on the question so as to clearly demonstrate your understanding of the topic area and provide sufficient detail which answers the questions to a satisfactory level.

There are no minimum word limits placed on assignment questions, however it is expected that most questions will require approximately 50 to 100 words of readable, logical and verifiable information.

2. The extent and depth of research undertaken (-2 marks)

Your answers should show wide reading related to the question being answered. This would extend beyond the textbook to other texts, newspaper and magazines. Specific resources from the Internet could also be used. The Harvard Referencing style is the required referencing style for this assessment. (refer http://scu.edu.au/library/index.php/14). Your assignment should also include a Reference List / Bibliography identifying the extent of the research undertaken. Failure to demonstrate extended research or provide a Reference list can result in the loss of up to 2 marks.

3. Your assignment should have a professional presentation with appropriate use of headings and sections and appropriate use of spelling, grammar and referencing. Marks may be deducted for excessive incorrect grammar, spelling and failing to have a page break between questions.

3. If merit pay is supposed to increase individual equity and unions are very concerned about equity, why do unions frequently oppose merit pay for their membership? Further, if given the choice, unions would prefer to implement a skill-based pay system rather than some form of gain-sharing plan, why?

I have never been involved in a union and I would say that 50% of the time, those that are complain about the amount of their dues with nothing to show for it, and the other 50% are grateful for the peace of mind that is given to know that someone has their back in the event of a work-related issue. What I want to know is, does union membership equal job satisfaction? “Despite a great deal of research over several decades, the answer to this question is still uncertain… the relationship between union membership and job satisfaction varies across countries and that unions matter only for certain aspects of job satisfaction—those that can more readily be changed by unions” (Hipp and Givan, 2015). As we will find in our text, due to internationalization, unions support pay-for-performance plans because studies have shown that there are linkages between performance based pay and worker productivity. “About 20 percent of all U.S. collective bargaining agreements permit some alternative reward system (e.g. lump sum, piece rate, gain sharing, profit sharing, skill-based pay)” (Milkovich et al., 2014, p.527). In other unionized firms, we might find more group-based measures because it benefits the union AND the workers. This is the premise of the gain-sharing plan, which is a design intended to align workers and managers to streamline operations and cut costs (Milkovich et al., p. 528). The chart in the Milkovich et al. (2014) text on page 528, Exhibit 15. 1 Union Perceptions of Gain Sharing, lists nine reasons for unions favoring gain sharing and nine reasons for opposing it. In thinking about teacher unions, I would add to the list of oppositions, that newer members have little to no input on the structure. “Teachers with little or no experience are the ones most liable to be left out of the majority coalition for several reasons… union contracts are often negotiated months or even years in advance of the school year for which they apply” (Winters, 2011). As a result, these teachers (who have likely replaced veteran teachers or more skilled teachers looking for better pay) have no idea what is going on and will rely heavily on the decisions of the union and the school administrators. The other downside to this is that, the union may suggest a larger differential between teachers who have advanced degrees and those that do not as a means to support a pay-for-performance plan. Because the teacher salary is so low in the first place, this may mean that the lower end of the spectrum may not receive a reasonable working wage from the get go and putting themselves in debt even further may not ever be worth it if the “larger” pay can’t even cover the student loans they would take out to get the advanced degree in the first place.

Plan to spend about 30 minutes to an hour in a preschool setting. A good time to observe would be during circle time, independent learning time, or during free choice time. If this is not an option, please view the video, Five Basic Functions of Language, found in Chapter 7 of your text.

Describe the interactions and the language experiences that are taking place in the social setting. Refer to Chapter 7 for various examples of ways this can be seen in the classroom. Record your observations in a professional manner, maintaining the confidentiality of the site and the teachers’ and students’ real names. Use your observations to write an analysis of the language experiences that were observed.

In your discussion post, be sure to include your actual observation notes as well as a 150- to 250-word analysis that is supported by reference(s) to the textbook.

For your analysis, discuss:

1. What experiences support language acquisition?
2. What experiences/interactions need refinement?

You will rely on the information you have gained thus far, as well as your insights, to evaluate the above questions. Be sure to format all in-text citations and reference(s) in APA style.
