Biological and Behaviorist Perspectives of Temperament

Part one: Spark Discussion

Post a 1 to 2 paragraph in your opinion, but also based upon what you have read for this course so far, what side of the “nature versus nurture” argument aligns more with your thinking? Is it biology or environment that has the greater influence on your actions and reactions to events and stimuli that occur in your everyday life? Why?

To prepare for part two: Biological and Behaviorist Perspectives of Temperament

  • Review the Learning Resources for this week.

Course Text: Cervone, D., & Pervin, L. A. (2016). Personality: Theory and research (13th ed.). Hoboken, NJ: John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Chapter 9, “Biological Foundations of Personality” (pp. 261–298)

Chapter 10, “Behaviorism and the Learning Approaches to Personality” (pp. 299–332)

https://www.ted.com/talks/amy_cuddy_your_body_language_shapes_who_you_are

https://academic.oup.com/ije/article/40/3/563/740639

  • Consider how biological and behaviorist theories apply to your experience with temperament—both your own and that of others you know well.
  • Based on the Learning Resources and your experience, take a position on whether biology or environment is more influential in explaining temperament.
  • Research in the Walden Library or other sources for a scholarly resource that provides additional evidence for your position.

Part two: Post a response to these two questions that includes the following:

  • In your own words, explain how temperament is viewed from the biological and behaviorist perspectives.
  • State your position on whether biology or environment is more influential in shaping and explaining an individual’s temperament. Support your position with findings from the Learning Resources, the scholarly resource that you found, and examples from your experience.

To prepare for Part three: Comparing and Contrasting Biological and Behaviorist Theories

You will consider a case study: Jane and John. They are fraternal twins who have grown up together in the same family, but who have very different temperaments. You will compare and contrast biological and behaviorist theories to understand and explain the differences between Jane and John.

  • Consider these descriptions of Jane and John. Keep in mind they are fraternal twins. Although their age is not given, from their activities they are teens in high school.
    • Jane is very outgoing. She enjoys large gatherings of friends, participates in many extracurricular activities in school, and is a cheerleader and captain of her volleyball team. She loves to travel, meet new people, and experience different cultures.
    • John is a quiet and studious young man. He loves to read and to listen to classical music. He has a small, intimate circle of friends who share the same interests. He is captain of his school’s chess team, and his idea of the perfect sporting event is a chess competition. He is not interested in travel—unless he is going to a chess competition.
  • Review the Learning Resources for Week 5 and consider the similarities, differences, strengths, and limitations of the biological and behaviorist theories of personality.
  • Consider how both biological and behaviorist theories would explain the differences in Jane and John.
  • Consider which approach you agree with more and your reasoning. (Note that you may take the same basic position that you have in the Discussion this week or a different view based on these siblings.)
  • Be sure your analysis applies specifically to Jane and John. Your Assignment should not address siblings in general.

For part three submit a 2- to 3-page paper that includes the following four questions:

  • Compare and contrast biological and behaviorist theories by explaining the strengths and limitations of each theory.
  • Apply the behaviorist theory in explaining the differences in the siblings Jane and John.
  • Apply the biological theory in explaining the differences in the siblings Jane and John.
  • Explain which approach is most effective for understanding the differences between Jane and John, and defend your reasoning.

How was the assimilation of the Native Americans fought throughout history?

For your Final Project, you may write a paper.

It must be four to five pages in length, plus a title page and reference list, formatted according to APA style.

Please note that you must properly cite your sources according to APA style.

To complete this project:

Choose from one of the topics below and analyze its history from 1877 to the present.

Select four specific events or developments that span the years covered by this course, based on their impact on the topic. Two of the events must be from before 1945 and two events must be from after 1945. You must assess how the events in relationship to the topic changed over time and explain how the changes occurred. Please refer back to your Week Three Assignment, consider your instructor’s comments and make any necessary revisions.

Write an introduction with a thesis. Your thesis should summarize the main conclusions that you discovered while researching your topic and that you will support with a logical argument based on evidence (sources). Please refer back to your Week Three Assignment, consider your instructor’s comments, and make any necessary revisions to your thesis statement.

Connect each of the events or developments you have chosen back to your main thesis. The information presented must be organized and in chronological order.

You must use at least four sources in your paper other than the textbook, with at least two primary sources and at least two document. Please refer back to your Week Three Assignment, consider your instructor’s comments, and make any necessary revisions.

Event 1: 1877 to 1945

1. Death of Sitting Bull

2. December 15, 1890

3. Little Eagle, South Dakota

4. Chief Sitting Bull, the Sioux warriors, Federal police

5. Chief Sitting Bull was a wanted man after being responsible for the death of General Custer during Little Big Horn. He was a big threat because of his resistance to the assimilation and Major Laughlin put an order out for his arrest. When Sitting Bull was approached an altercation happened and it lead to his death.

6. This was a significant historical event because he was looked up to by many along with the fact that his death was by being shot in the head from behind which left a lot of people questioning just how much of an altercation it really was.

Event 2: 1877 to 1945

1. Curtis Act

2. 1898

3. Indian territory in Oklahoma

4. Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Seminole tribal nations and the United States government

5. The federal government was under pressure to provide more land for its citizens.

6. It overrode the Natives rights to their land and mandated it to their citizens.

Event 3: 1945 to the present

2. 1946

3. Throughout the U.S.

4. The U.S. Government and the Native Americans

5. Treaty enforcement compliances not being made along with outcries from the Native Americans who wanted what was rightfully theirs.

6. Commision was made to settle the Native Americans grievances. Native American Tribes were given five years in which to file their claim(s), prove their original title to the property in question in order to bring the suit up for possible settlement. By the end of it all more than $800,000,000 was made out in settlements combined.

Event 4: 1945 to the present

1. National Indian Youth Council (NIYC) was created

2. 1961

3. Throughout the U.S.

4. Native Americans from every tribe

5. The many years of suffrage and being mistreated along with almost all of their land being stolen from them. The painful process that the Government put them through to assimilate them into the “civilized” world.

6. It gives the younger generation of Natives a voice and lets them be known that they are just as important as any other race that lives in the U.S.

Primary Sources

APA Citation for Primary Source 1:

Edgren, R. (1922, February 18). Indian Thorpe Greatest Sports Marvel Of All Time. Evening World. Retrieved from http://chronclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn83030193/1…

Annotation for Primary Source 1:

The thesis is mainly of how great of an athlete Thorpe was and it helped show a front of how assimilation was working with the Natives being “normalized”. It raises questions of how some Natives were assimilating and joining the “civil” world. It helps prove my thesis because I can use this as a counter argument and then use other sources and facts to prove that it was just a front put up to ease the common people who were still resistant to Natives assimilating into their world.

APA Citation for Primary Source 2:

Records of the Indian Claims Commission. (2015, August 15). Retrieved January 29, 2018, from https://www.archives.gov/research/guide-fed-record…

Annotation for Primary Source 2:

This is a record of the Indians Claim Commission Act which is overall the Natives being able to get recommissioned for land lost that was originally theirs. It helps my thesis by showing how long it took for the Natives to finally be able to even get recognition that they had unrightfully lost land and were many years later being reimbursed for stolen land.

APA Citation for Secondary Source 1:

Macfarlane, J. (2010). ‘Chief of All the Sioux’: An Assessment of Sitting Bull and Lakota Unity, 1868-1876. American Nineteenth Century History, 11(3), 299-320. doi:10.1080/14664658.2010.520929

Annotation for Secondary Source 1:

The author’s thesis is that Sitting Bull was fighting for a vision that was not possible, which is one supreme chief over all of the tribes united when really each tribe wanted things as they were before. This helps prove my thesis because it emphasizes how they were fighting the assimilation into the U.S.

APA Citation for Secondary Source 2:

Peter Iverson, a. (2012). Red Power Rising: The National Indian Youth Council and the Origins of Native Activism. ByBradley G. Shreve. (,University of Oklahoma Press,2011. xviii + 275 pp.$34.95). (2), 323. doi:10.1525/phr.2012.81.2.323

Annotation for Secondary Source 2:

The author’s thesis is over how the National Indian Youth Council was created in a way for many activists to band together and stand up for their ancestors and to try and preserve what is left of their culture. It helps me prove my thesis by showing how even after all has been settled their are still activists making sure that they continue to get their rights.

4. Thesis Statement

Thesis:

Assimilation of the Native Americans into the United States was a long and grueling process that was fought every step of the way from both sides.

Business Analysis and System Recommendation Report

Before you begin work on this assignment, be sure you have read the Case Study on Chesapeake IT Consultants (CIC).

Overview

As a business analyst in the Chief Information Officer’s (CIO’s) department of Chesapeake IT Consulting (CIC), you have been assigned to conduct an analysis, develop a set of system requirements and recommend an IT solution to improve the hiring process for CIC. This work will be completed in four stages, and each of these four stages will focus on one section of an overall Business Analysis and System Recommendation (BA&SR) report to be delivered to the CIO.

Section I: Strategic Use of Technology (Stage 1) – The first step is to look at the organization and explain how an IT system could be used to support CIC’s strategies and objectives, and support its decision-making processes.

Section II: Process Analysis (Stage 2) – Next you will evaluate current processes and workflow and explain how CIC can use IT to improve its processes and workflow.

Section III: Requirements (Stage 3) –Then you will identify key stakeholder expectations for the new technology solution to support CIC’s hiring process and develop a set of requirements.

Section IV: System Recommendation (Stage 4) – Finally, you will review the provided Vendor brochure for a proposed solution and explain how it meets the requirements and what needs to be done to implement the system within CIC.

The sections of the BA&SR will be developed and submitted as four staged assignments. In stages 2, 3 and 4, you will also incorporate any feedback received when the previous stage was graded to improve the effectiveness of your overall report and then add the new section to your report. At the end of the course, you will submit a complete BA&SR document that includes all the sections and changes that resulted from previous feedback. Part of the grading criteria for Stage 4 submission includes addressing previous feedback to improve the final report.

Assignment – BA&SR: Introduction and Section I – Strategic Use of Technology

Write an appropriate Introduction to the entire BA&SR Report (guidelines are provided below). Section I of the BA&SR document contains an organizational analysis and identifies ways in which information systems can help CIC, the organization in the case study, meet its strategic goals and meet the information needs of various levels of management.

Using the case study, assignment instructions, Course Content readings, and external resources, develop your Introduction and Section I: Background and Organizational Analysis. To start, review the Business Perspectives Module (week 1 content), particularly the sections that describe the example of Booz Allen Hamilton, a services company with a business model similar to that of CIC in the case study. The case study tells you that the executives and employees at CIC have identified a need for an effective and efficient hiring system. As you review the case study, use the assignment instructions to take notes to assist in your analysis; in particular, look for objectives to support the strategies in the table below, and decisions that the various individuals make in the hiring process as expressed in the “interviews.”

Use the outline format, headings and tables provided and follow all formatting instructions below. For Stage 1, create a title page and reference page that will be used for all 4 stages.

Apply specific information from the case study to address each area.

self-managed team concept from the perspective of leadership

The forum discussion for the previous module required students to consider the self-managed team concept from the perspective of leadership. For this module, students will be expected to think about what is needed from the individual team members.

Students are to create forum posts for either of the alternatives listed below.

  1. Analyze yourself: Based on what’s been described in the lectures and readings about the ideal member of a self-managed team, do you feel you have what it takes to be effective team member? Why or why not? What do you perceive as your strengths, and what aspects of your mindset and behavior would need to be tweaked?
  2. Do you know anyone who you feel would flourish as a member of a self-managed team? If so, please describe this person, focusing on the characteristics which make that person a great team member.

Be sure to comment on at least one post by a fellow-student, too! Remember to be gracious when someone responds to your post – answer questions, or say something relevant to keep the conversation going.

Human Resources Strategic Plan

Portfolio Project #1 provides data from a hypothetical organization. The data can be found at the bottom of the page.

You will create a strategic plan that aligns the human resources (HR) function with the organization’s mission, vision, and objectives. The overall scope of the Portfolio Project is to create a “Shared Services” structure for HR that will be housed at the organization’s corporate offices.

Individual Sections:

Outline:

Prepare an outline of your plan project. Please use APA format and include a two- to three-sentence description of each section.

Annotated Bibliography

A solid foundation of research will support the theoretical base and practical applications of your strategic plan. Prepare an annotated bibliography of the 10 or more sources you have selected.

Purpose Statement

Most of us are aware of the term “purpose statement” but are unsure of its real meaning within an organization. It is a statement describing the organization’s purpose, or the reason for its existence. The purpose of an organization reflects a desired position in the marketplace. It should accurately answer to the questions below. The purpose statement is the written summary of those answers.

  • Who are we?
  • What do we do?
  • For whom do we do this?
  • How do we know when we are getting it done?

The purpose statement is the written summary of those answers. The most effective purpose statements are short, concise, and direct. A good purpose statement is between 2–3 sentences.

Answer the four questions above and create a purpose statement for your HR department.

Name your company and decide the service they provide or products they manufacture.

COMMUNICATIONS DEPARTMENT
ENGLISH 1302
RESEARCH PAPER GUIDELINES

The research paper is a major component of the English 1302, Composition II. In this course,
instructors are required to teach students the research process. Some aspects of this process may
be subject to individual instructors’ requirements. However, to ensure that all English 1302
courses contain common core elements, the members of the Communications Department identify
that core as follows:

● MLA is the required documentation style and should be taught in detail to the students.

● 10-15% of class time should be devoted to teaching the research process.

● Topics should be literary and may be selected by the instructor or selected by the students
with the help of the instructor.

● A substantial amount of time must be devoted to the discussion of plagiarism in research.
Instructors should be prepared to devote more than one lecture to this item.

● The completed essay (final draft) will contain seven to ten (8-10) pages (excluding any
title page, outline with thesis statement, and works cited pages as required by the
instructor).

● The paper will contain a minimum of 7 sources, including a variety of sources and
limiting Internet sources to two with the exception of databases.

● Cited material (direct quotes, paraphrases and summaries) will comprise no more than
30% of the paper at the discretion of the instructor following accepted guidelines of
scholarship.

● An early draft of the research paper must be submitted before the final draft for either
instructor and/or peer review
